Katherine Stuart Obituary

Katherine K. Stuart, daughter of Dan S. Kitchel and Florence Rains Kitchel, was born in Bisbee, Arizona on November 20, 1914. She graduated from Tombstone High School at age 16, from Arizona Teachers College (now ASU) in Tempe, and did graduate work at the University of Arizona. She taught in schools in Globe, Miami and Bisbee, Arizona. She married Herbert Z. Stuart of Golden, Colorado in 1940. They lived in Bisbee until moving to Garden City, NY in 1951. In retirement they lived in Silver City, NM. She moved to Colorado Springs in 1998. She was a member of O.E.S. and of Chapter BO, P.E.O. She had a remarkably indepent spirit. Even at age 95, she lived on her own and remained a mile-a-day walker. She was a bridge player, an aficionado of opera and symphonic music, and was consistently interested in history and current events. She delighted in her family and friends. She died peacefully on January 6, 2010 surrounded by family. She is survived by her children, Raynelle Kuckel (Ben) of Colorado Springs, Ken Stuart (Barb) of Centennial, CO, Sally Adair (Mike) of Phippsburg, ME, and Dan Stuart (Gail) of Manitou Springs, Also surviving her are seven grandchildren: Doug Stuart, Lexey Stuart, Ryan Adair (Joanne), Kevin Adair, Tyler Stuart, David Stuart, and Madison Stuart, and one great-grandchild, Alison Adair. Her brother, George Kitchel, predeceased her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Community Congregational Church of Manitou Springs, In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Community Congregational Church of Manitou Springs, 103 Pawnee Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO 80829, or the H.Z. Stuart Memorial Scholarship Fund, Colorado School of Mines, P.O. Box 4005, Golden, CO 80401.
