Kathleen McLain Obituary

McLain, Kathleen (Kathy), 67, a gifted and much loved teacher, died on October 15, 2011. Kathy was born in the Bronx, New York, traveled the world as a teacher and Air Force spouse and came to Colorado Springs in 1985. In the Springs she taught third and fourth grades at Holy Trinity, Pine Valley, and Prairie View elementary schools. Kathy had a knack for understanding each child's unique gifts and strengths, and could always discover that special something that would motivate a child to learn. She had a special love and talent for inspiring boys to write. After 30 years of teaching, Kathy retired and actively volunteered at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Empathetic by nature, she particularly enjoyed serving in the caring role of a Stephen Minister. Kathy was the beloved wife of Ralph and mother of Evan and Jennifer. She was cherished by her grandchildren, Roary, Caden, Colm, and Rafferty; her daughter-in-law and son-in-law Jami Kimble and Dave Weis; her sisters Patricia and Mary and brothers Michael and Peter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family. She was loved greatly and will be missed greatly. The world will be a poorer place without her laughter. Vigil service, Friday, November 4, 5pm and Funeral Mass, Saturday, November 5, 11am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 6455 Brook Park Drive, Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, Kathy asked that family and friends wishing to honor her life make a donation to the good works of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (http://fundraising.stjude.org/goto/KathyMcLain).

Mrs. McLain was such a great teacher! She was so kind and loving and I loved her enthusiasm inside and out the class! I remember my sister had her as her fourth grade teacher. When we grew a little older we would still go back and visit! Haven't seen or talked to her in awhile and its crazy that I ran into another teacher that taught 2nd grade when I was there and she told me all about Mrs. McLain health condition I was shocked! She will be missed a lot! Prayers are going out to her family!

A wise man once stated "A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell, where her influence stops." I feel this quote adequately sums up the true nature of how Mrs.McLain taught. I was lucky enough to have her as both my third and fourth grade teacher at Prairie Hills Elementary. I am now twenty years old attending courses in Germany and have nothing but fond memories about Mrs.McLain. She was always a smiling face and a listening ear. I can almost still hear the sound of her unique laughter. She was the type of woman who made it more than apparent how genuinely she cared for everyone. I was quite the trouble maker when I entered her door, all those years ago, and I believe she helped mold me into who I am now. Heck everytime I attempt to spell the word banana, I still can't help but fondly remember her standing at the front of the class making monkey noises to aid us in our attempts to remember how many letters there were.
After graduating and through out the years, Kelsey Slater, Carly Meredith, and I would occasionally go check in on her because seeing her wasn't simply a blast from the past. Visiting her room was like walking back into a safe haven. She created a place where we felt safe. Seeing her simply let me slip back, even if it was just for a moment, to a time when things were simpler and when it seemed like she just had all the answers to why life was so confusing. From her classroom I didn't just gain knowledge, or even the friendships of two girls I still love dearly, but also a sanctuary of sorts. Mrs.McLain was truly an exceptional teacher and overall amazing woman. One can only hope to be as fondly remembered as she is. I know Mrs.McLain will always remain close to my heart as well as the countless others whos lives she changed.

Kathleen McLain had such a huge impact on my life and my two best friends, Alyssa Harper and Kelsey Slater. The Three of us met in Mrs. McLain's 3rd and 4th grade class at Prairie Hills Elementary and I can still vividly remember staying after school talking with her in her classroom about anything and everything. She encouraged the three of us to be the best we could be and to always live life with creativity and a sense of humor. As a sophomore in college now, I can honestly say I remember more knowledge from her 3rd and 4th grade class than I do from my higher education learning. She brought me and my two best friends together and changed our lives forever. She was an incredibly amazing woman, and will be missed but never forgotten.
