Kathyrn Curtis Obituary

Kathryn C. Curtis, 88, a resident of Colorado Springs since 2003, died August 28, 2006 at a local care center. Kay was born June 3, 1918, in Calcite, Colorado, to Earl M. and Bertha (Feldhauser) Michael. She graduated from North High School in Denver and attended Lamont School of Music. She was an accomplished soprano soloist and sang with vocal ensembles and choirs throughout her life. Kay married Theodore M. Curtis on December 8, 1940; they were celebrating their first anniversary when the attack on Pearl Harbor was announced. Ted served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and his training took them through nearly every state in the Union before he went overseas. In 1947 Kay and Ted moved to Alamosa, Colorado, where they lived for the next 30 years. Kay sang with the First Methodist Church choir, was active in Chapter DP, P.E.O., Girl Scouts, P.T.A., and several bridge clubs. Following retirement Kay and Ted spent winters in Sun City, AZ., and summers at their cabin in South Fork, CO. Kay sang with the Willowbrook Methodist Church choir, served as president of the Sun City P.E.O. Group, designed and made stained glass windows, collected rocks and minerals, and pursued her interest in photography. She loved the mountains and could identify most of the high-country wildflowers and birds. She joined Ted in four-wheeling through the mountains of southern Colorado and was always the first to spot elk or mountain sheep on some distant hillside. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Earl and Helen, and infant son Michael Theodore. She is survived by daughters Marjory (Chuck) Asay, Becky (Chuck) Owsley; grandchildren Jeff (Hallie) Owsley, David Owsley, Kathy (Jeremy) Soden, Paul (Wendy) Asay, Amy McIntosh Curtis; and great-grandchildren Charles, Laura, and John Owsley, Bo and Sawyer Soden, Colin and Emily Asay. A graveside service was held September 2, 2006 at Sunland Cemetery in Sun City, AZ. A memorial service will be held at the First Methodist Church in Alamosa on Saturday, September 16. Contributions may be made in Kay's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 2315 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80904.
