Kenneth Boyer Obituary

It is with profound sorrow and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ken, beloved husband of Sherry on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Ken was the oldest son of Col. Kenneth G. and Kari Boyer, both deceased. As the son of an Air Force officer stationed in several states and foreign countries, including Paris, France, Ken grew up with a love of travel.

He was gifted with a brilliant and superb mind; and extremely knowledgeable. He was well read on a wide variety of subjects. Ken was a gentle, kind, and loyal man and a friend to all who knew him.

He earned his Bachelor's degree in physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and earned a Master's and Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. He served in the U.S. Air Force for fourteen years; taught physics at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; and he worked at the Las Alamos Labs in New Mexico as a research scientist in the nuclear program. Ken then taught physics at Woodland Park High School for over twenty years and retired in 2014.

Ken was also a musician and he met Sherry more than twenty years ago while playing together in the Pikes Peak Philharmonic Orchestra. He also played first trumpet for many years with the Little London Winds. Ken was an avid runner, participating for several years in the Pikes Peak Marathon and he wanted to travel the world. Ken and Sherry traveled to Italy several times and also to South Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Turkey, and throughout Europe. Ken and Sherry's last travel adventure was a family vacation together with their stepsons and grandchildren at Disneyworld.

Ken is survived by his wife, Sherry; his sister, Deborah and husband Ken Smith of Kansas; his brother, David and wife Candi of Colorado Springs; his stepson Sean and wife Charyce of Brighton; his stepson Patrick and wife Keiko of Japan and five grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel.

I knew Ken at Georgia Tech. He was one of a group of 8-9 students who got to be close friends. I just heard about Ken's passing as this group was planning a 50 year get together at a Georgia Tech homecoming game in 2023. We met Sherry at a similar gathering about 20 years ago. Sorry for your loss Sherry.

Dr. Boyer was my Physics teacher my junior year of highschool at WPHS (His last at the highschool). He was kind and gentle and the reason I fell in love with the subject. It was first period at 7:50 am. No one hardly ever spoke a word in that class; everyone (including myself) respected him and loved to listen to him teach. So sad to hear about his passing. RIP you were a wonderful human.

I was fortunate enough to not only get to work with Dr. Boyer at WPHS. I got to see first hand how amazing he was with his Physics students and the creativity with the structures they'd build using the donated food. Then in the last few years I got to sit and talk with him again as he was a sub in the building. I will miss our lunch conversations. He was a great guy and a wonderful teacher.

Ken substituted in my science class more than once and the students always spoke highly him. His happy personality and genuine smile will be missed! I am very sorry for your loss!
