Kenneth Hawthorne Barber Obituary

Ken passed into the arms of his Savior and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" on April 4, 2013 after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1925 to Harold and Dorothy Barber and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where he graduated from North Fulton High School, attended Davidson College in North Carolina, and then graduated in 1948 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He attended flight training at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and later graduated in the flying class of 49 C at Nellis AFB in Nevada, receiving his Silver Wings. During his time in San Antonio he met the love of his life, Carolyn Row, and married her after graduating from flight training in 1949. Their first station was Clark AFB in the Philippines, from where he went to fly 100 combat missions over Korea as a fighter pilot in the F-51 Mustang, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other medals. He also served with the infantry as a Forward Air Controller on the ground calling in air strikes. They spent twenty-two years in the Air Force, stationed at numerous bases. Their favorites were Albrook AFB in Panama, where he was Assistant to the Commandant of the School for Latin America, and the US Air Force Academy, where he served as an instructor in Military Studies with the original cadre. In the late 1950's, Ken and partners began developing land near Monument, an interest that never stopped. Ken was personally involved developing more than 25,000 acres of land in the mountains, Black Forest and Monument areas and Wyoming. He formed The Rawhide Company, REALTORS® in 1973, which is still in business today. He served as a Director of the REALTORS® Association and Colorado Springs Symphony, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Winter Night Club, Daedalians, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Colorado Mountain Club, Garden of the Gods Club, Fine Arts Center and numerous other organizations. An avid outdoorsman and fitness enthusiast, Ken climbed all of the 14,000' peaks in Colorado, many of them as a trip leader for the Colorado Mountain Club, as well as Mount Rainier in Washington (twice), and enjoyed horses, hunting and fishing. He was very active in the Boy Scouts since boyhood. Among his numerous scouting adventures were trips to Philmont and leading a troop of Explorer Scouts through the jungle across the Isthmus of Panama from Atlantic to Pacific. In 2012 he was awarded the Silver Beaver for his lifetime contributions to Scouting. Ken loved music, played guitar and piano, and often quoted poetry from his prodigious memory. He worked out faithfully, and read constantly. He was a good, interesting, challenging, and generous man. He loved and helped people, and was loved by them in return. He had integrity. You could do business with him on a handshake, and many did. He is survived by his wife of 63 ½ years, Carolyn, daughter Nancy R. Barber, sons Kenneth C. Barber and Douglas H. Barber, four grandchildren - Kristina, Chris, Lezer and Joshua Barber, a sister, Rosemary Braun of Atlanta, cousins Cornelia Maytag and Nancy McLaughry and numerous nieces and nephews. If it is true that a person who serves well and makes a difference in the lives of others never truly dies, then Ken is immortal. We will miss you. Happy Trails, Ken! A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 1:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, CO. A private inurnment will take place at the US Air Force Academy on April 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OCF (Officers Christian Fellowship), 3784 South Inca St. Englewood, CO (online at www.ocfusa.org/donate/#.UWK6T6LQrhg), or Pikes Peak Council-Boy Scouts of America, 985 West Fillmore St., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (online at http://www.pikespeakbsa.org/Donate).

Meeting Ken and buying property from Rawhide in Rivers Divide (Peyton) in 1991, influenced my life in countless ways. He was a wonderfully extraordinary man; kind, ethical, and humorous. I hope his family and loved ones know he´s not forgotten.

We will always remember Ken's warm smile and the friendship we established with him and Carolyn as result of purchasing a few acres at Bridle Bit Estates. We cherish the time we spent with them during our visits to Colorado Springs. His faith in and love for Jesus Christ influenced our Christian walk profoundly. We look forward to that time when all of us will worship the King of kings and LORD of lords together in His Kingdom. Until then, Ken, we miss you!

Carolyn--I pray that the Lord will comfort you and you family over the "graduation" of a great man. We all take great comfort in knowing where his now because of his faith. The Boy Scouts and OCF were privileged to enjoy Ken's leadership and lifelong support. It has been a blessing to Donna and I to know your family!

I am so fortunate that I was able to chat with Ken last fall and renew our memories. We told tales of our wonderful CMC outing, backpacking across the Grand Canyon, during which Ken and Neale Reinitz entertained us for 9 days to the Grand Canyon, across it, and home. They had a continuous stream of poetry and prose recitations which we interrupted with songs under the evening stars. It was amazing the extensive compendium of literature that Ken and Neale could recite.

On another memorable outing Ken led us on a backpack into the Flattops through beautiful golden aspen. During the night about 6-8 inches of snow fell. We had the misfortune to follow Ken out on a trail with dozens of wind fallen aspen, having to climb over each trunk with our back packs.

Many thanks for the memories, Ken. You've "slipped the surly bonds of earth." Now you forever "dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings."

Dear Carolyn, Doug, and family,
We are so sorry to learn of Ken's passing. We so enjoyed getting to know all three of you and working with Ken and Doug on various projects in Bridle Bit Ranch. We are grateful to consider you friends and to have the privilege of Ken's inspiration. He was not only honest, but also forthright. His integrity was without question, and his desire to treat others as he wanted to be treated serves as an example for all of us. May he be with God, and may God be with you. Our thoughts and prayers, Jim and Martha Borgstede

Dear Ken:
I will never forget the support and fun you shared with me when we did some of the 14ers... even on Ladies' Day in the CMC. You were always a kind, humorous, and an interesting fellow. They don't make gentlemen like you anymore. Peace my friend.

Ken & Doug... In scripture, Jesus said that if we have seen him, we have seen the father.
I never met your Dad, and yet I can tell he was a man of character, honor, great love, kind, caring. You see, I have met his sons..

I love you both and am here anytime for you

Ken was a wonderful man, I'm sorry to hear of his passing. We bought property from him when he first started developing Rivers Divide. His integrity and humor were such a delight. Once while driving around searching for the perfect building site, Ken showed us a 40 acre lot of grass that had 1 lonely little pine tree. "A wooded lot! I need to raise the price on that!" His family & loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

Carolyn, Doug, Kenny, and Nancy,
Never gone in my mind. A true enduring spirit, Ken took hold of every encounter in his life as if it was the most important at that moment. As a result I always felt as if I mattered to him regardless. What a legacy and what a loss to those of us who cherished the moments with him. Your sorrow must be over bearing. I wish you peace when you need it, all of you. I imagine even now you are already wiping away some of the tears with fond memories. What a gift was Ken. I am saddened to know that I will not see him again in this life. Yet, Hurray for the next! Ken will have already set out some really good trails to hike and explore.

Dear Carolyn, Doug, Nancy and Ken----- Ken was always there with words of encouragement to me - a newbie who needed all the self-confidence building she could get. He'd always ask "How're you doing---- how's it going?" This meant a lot to me. I belonged to the Rawhide family.

What a wonderful life he lived --- what contributions he made! I fully believe he'll be organizing a group "up yonder" to continue the work.

Men like him never leave us-----I hope you can find some peace and solace knowing how many lives he touched. We all carry him warmly in our hearts.

Dear Carolyn, Doug, Kenny and Nancy~ My heart just aches as I received news today of Ken's passing. So many memories come flooding back of wonderful times with him. He always called me his "Georgia Girl" and we had a special bond, both being from the same area of Atlanta. He was most certainly one of the kindest, most generous men I have ever known and I feel so truly blessed to have worked for him, and had the priviledge to call him a friend as well. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all and I know that heaven just got brighter! My love always, Mary Spearman
