Kenneth Lovell, M.D. Obituary

Kenneth Richards Lovell, M.D. was born on October 27, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to Edwin Glen Lovell and Edith Richards Lovell. When he was six months old his mother passed away. He was raised by his aunt, Blodwen Lovell, in Clydach Vale, Wales. He returned to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 14 to reunite with his father. Ken married his junior high school sweetheart, Rose Berwing Lovell, on November 6, 1948. Dr. Lovell received his M.D. from The Ohio State University School of Medicine in 1956 and completed his rotating internship at St. Rita's Hospital in Lima, Ohio. He served two years as a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps at Carswell Air Force Base in Ft. Worth, Texas. The family moved to Colorado Springs in 1958 where Dr. Lovell began his medical practice at Westside Medical Building at 2808 West Colorado Avenue then helped to build the Westside Family Health Center at 2020 West Colorado Avenue, where he practiced until his retirement. During his forty-year career in family medicine on the west side of Colorado Springs, Dr. Lovell cared for many generations of patients and was considered a skilled diagnostician, trusted adviser, and compassionate physician. Dr. Lovell was one of the first physicians in Colorado to become certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a status he maintained until his retirement. He was also a member of the American Medical Association. He served in numerous professional capacities including Treasurer of the Colorado Medical Society; Treasurer of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Academy of Family Practice; and Chief of Family Practice at Penrose, St. Francis, and Memorial Hospitals. He also served as Chief of Staff at St. Francis Hospital for two terms. In 2005 Dr. Lovell was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Memorial Hospital. In addition to his active medical practice, Dr. Lovell served as an Elder at Gateway Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. Ken enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing in the Colorado outdoors with his family, friends, and dogs. He was an avid gardener and traveled extensively with Rose. He took pride in his Welsh heritage. Ken was a loyal fan of The Ohio State University and Air Force Academy football teams. Dr. Lovell was preceded in death by Rose, his loving wife of 59 years. He is survived by their children: John Lovell of Longmont, Colorado; Mark Lovell, M.D., of Denver, Colorado; Linda Lovell Boyd of Wetmore, Kansas; and Mary Lovell of Lakewood, Colorado, as well as by ten grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating Dr. Lovell's life will be held at Gateway Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 12. Dear John,Mark,Linda,Mary, and families,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Dr. Lovell was really a great guy, he gave more than 100% to his medical practice every day. I'm proud to say "the doctor", as I liked to call him, was my father-in-law. He and Rose were always very kind and gracious to me, even in the days when I was courting their daughter Linda prior to our marriage. Dr. Lovell and I had many conversations and I always found him to be a man with an unswerving sense of morality and family values. He also had a good sense of humor and a great laugh. Having lost my own father many years before, it always made me miss him a little less to know "the doctor" was in my life and always so supportive of me. Ken will certainly be missed, but never forgotten.

Dr. Lovell was the best! He took care of my parents, my husband and our daughters and me. What a blessing he was in our lives. They broke the mold when God made him. He made house calls, he sat with us, came to my Mom and Dad's visitation's when they passed away. He brought my Mom home from the hospital when she was visiting my Dad and her car wouldn't start. He was very highly regarded on the Westside and in the Medical Community. He touched so many lives and will forever be remembered. Thanks for sharing him with all of us.

What a very special man he was. He was so important to our family and gave me such a feeling of security knowing that his kind compassionate manner was always there for us. I still remember him telling me, when I expressed dismay that someday he would retire, that Rose married him for life...not for lunch. May you always remember how very special he was.

To the Lovell kids. I have very fond memories of Dr. Lovell making house calls at the Henninger's when I was a girl. He took such good care of Gretchen and me. And he took good care of my husband and children as well. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Now he is reunited with Rose and all is well.

John, Mark, Linda, Mary & Family,
My heart goes out to you all at this sorrowful time. I still remember the "house call" from Doc Lovell when I was down with bronchitis and a 103 degree temp when I was 11. He even dropped by on his way home a few days later to check on me. A compassionate doctor and family man.
My hope is that you are able to find comfort and peace knowing how many lives your father touched and that we share in your sorrow. Blessings to you all.

John, Mark, Linda and Mary:
My deepest sympathy at the loss of your father. Working for your father was a great pleasure for me. You all were more like family to me than just an employer. He was kind, funny, compassionate, and a wonderful man to work for and a great and loving physician. You all have my deepest sympathy at the loss of your father who was a very special man. He now joins Rose so they can spend eternity together.

Dear Lovell family...I was so sad to hear of your beloved fathers passing. He was our doctor our entire childhoods. Many a stitch was sewed on my brothers and I. Going to the doctor was never a scary thing knowing that our doctor was a neighbor whose kids we played with. Doc Lovell was the kindest, funniest gentle doctor a kid could ever have. I am sure he taught many a medical student a thing about how to do it right...I am sure he is thrilled to be with his beloved wife.

My condolences to the family of our family's beloved Doc Lovell. He was a faboulous pediatrician to all us Kinsey kids, growing up in C. Spgs. I was always glad to go see him as a kid, always made me feel comfortable and safe. He was a world class gentle man through and through. I can only hope my own kids appreciate their pediatrician in such regard when they grow up. I was able to find a sensitive, caring, gentle man for my own kids, and my "search criteria" was based on my memories of Doc Lovell. God bless and rest in peace, Jeanna Kinsey Frawley, now of Melrose, MA.
