Kenneth Makings Obituary

Kenneth Makings, long time resident of Colorado Springs passed away peacefully at home in Mesa, AZ on January 14, 2011. Ken was born in Ludell, Kansas, moved to a homestead in South Park, CO in 1932 and graduated from Fairplay High School. He enjoyed the world he was raised with horses, rodeos, playing music for dances, and learning the ranching and grocery business from his father. He moved to Brush, CO in 1946 to be in the locker business with his uncle and met his future wife, Mary Smythe. They were married in Greeley, June 2, 1949 and the same year they moved to Colorado Springs where they were owners of the 15th Street Grocery and later Ken-Mar Distributing Company which earned him the nickname "The Candy Man". It's also where their 3 children were born and raised. After retirement, they traveled and enjoyed many adventures roaming the US in their motor home. They moved to AZ in 2002 and enjoyed the climate along with family and many long time friends and new friends who had also moved there. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Mary, sister Bernice (Jack) Sparks of Montrose, CO, children Noble (Diana) of Mesa, AZ, Lew (Laura) of Encinitas, CA, and Lisa of Pine Island, MN, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 6 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Lew and Faye, an infant son Kenneth Leon, son-in-law, Craig Zunk, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. There will be a Celebration of his Life on Sunday, April 10th at 2 pm at The Eagles Lodge 1050 S. 21st Street with private interment at Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

To the makings family, Iam sorry for your loss as I was the meadow gold milk man who made dilveries to the store for years. I am in Phoenix this week and I called your house here and no answer and I got on the computer and you had a service in CS.
I am sorry not to be there.

The Makings Family. I am so sorry to hear about Ken. I was raised three blocks from their grocery store and I spent alot of time there with my mom, Betty Mensing. Those were the good old days. I am so glad you got to enjoy your retirment and life. Bless you all, stay strong.
