I enjoyed working with Ken on many projects during our years together at the City and County of Denver.
He'll be missed for all the fine work he did, and the fine person he was.

Ken and I were both hired by Public Works for the 1990 Library Bond projects and worked side by side for over 20 years. Ken was a wonderful public employee who worked very hard for the citizens of Denver. Ken's clients loved him and requested him to work on their projects because of his passion for his work. Ken was especially dedicated to the Red Rocks projects. He built roads up there, managed the design and construction of the Red Rocks Vistors' Center, rebuilt the seats and the stage of the ampitheater, the water treatment system and many back of the house projects. Ken also managed all the renovation and maintenance projects at the Denver Art Museum as directed by the DAM "Queen Bee" Terri Cross. Ken had boundless energy and in the summer he would meet contractors at 6am to play 9 holes of golf before work. Ken directed the design and construction of the Willis Case Golf Clubhouse and was very proud of it. Perhaps Ken's most challenging work with teammate Kay Krebs to build the Ellie Caulkins Opera House inside the shell of the 100 year old Historic Auditorium Theater. While politicians took the credit for many of these projects, Ken was the behind the scenes guy who made it happen. Ken was a multi-tasker and at the time of his 2010 retirement had 57 projects in the works. The Buildings, Museums and Parks in the City and County of Denver are more beautiful due to the dedication of City Architect and Preservationist, Ken Matthews.

I new Ken in High School, at Wasson. He was a great guy, always studious and clean cut. I hadn't seen him since the sixties but I remembered him as a friend. Sorry he is gone so soon.

Sometimes in a person's lifetime that special person comes into our lives that show us how wonderful it is to love, how fun it is to laugh, how great it is to share, and how precious every moment truly is. That is who Ken was to me. From the road trips hauling cars, to the car shows "kicking tires", skiing, golf, and everything in between, Ken knew how to make a day matter! I will cherish every moment we ever shared. He had the ability to make a person better than who they thought they were. May God be with the family through the times ahead. GodSpeed, my Love!
