Kirk Robinson Obituary

Kirk M. Robinson, 54, beloved husband, father, son and brother went to be with the Lord on March 6, 2006 after a heroic 15 month battle with kidney cancer. He will be missed for his love of family and friends, sense of humor, dedication, loyalty, and meticulous administration of maintenance at three major resort facilities. Kirk was born on December 22, 1951 in Comfrey, MN. He graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in Business Administration. In 1976, he was hired by The Broadmoor Hotel and was soon promoted to Director of Engineering in charge of the entire facility maintenance operation. During his employment, he oversaw the renovation of numerous stately buildings including Broadmoor West and Broadmoor South. Kirk was honored as the Manager of the Year in 1995. In 1997, Kirk accepted an equivalent position at Callaway Gardens golf and tennis resort in Pine Mountain, GA and commuted there for three years. He returned to Colorado Springs in 2000 as Director of Engineering at the Garden of the Gods Club and Kissing Camels Golf Club, truly beautiful facilities where he continued to work even during his illness. Kirk married Janice Knox on July 19, 1980. During their 25 years of marriage, his wife and three children were the center of his life. The family enjoyed many activities including trips to Vail, Lake Powell, MN, California and many RV camping trips. "Coach" Robinson had a lifelong passion for sports. He was an ardent Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan, played softball for Wade's Pancake House, and bowled several leagues. He coached Academy Little League Baseball and Gold Crown Boys Basketball. However, his main delight was attending his children's varied sporting evens, and recently viewing tapes of his son's Palmer HS Basketball Team. Kirk's battle with cancer was remarkable due to his continually positive attitude. He showed great strength and dignity during is declining health, never complained and touched numerous lives. He believed deeply in Jesus Christ and looked forward to eternal life in Heaven. Kirk is survived by his loving wife, Janice (Knox); daughter Kimberly, a medical student at Des Moines University; daughter Jessica, a student at UCCS; son Kevin, a student at Palmer HS; parents Dick and LaDonna Robinson of Windom, MN; sister Sandra (Pete) Frederixon of Apple Valley, MN; sister Renee (Tom) Harnack of Windom, MN. The family extends gratitude to the many family and friends who extended care, support, encouragement and prayer during Kirk's illness and to The Garden of the Gods Club, the Rocky Mountain Community Land Trust, The Broadmoor Hotel, First Presbyterian Church Stephen Ministry, Pikes Peak Hospice, and the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center. A memorial service and reception will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 13th at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou Street. I learned of Kirk´s passing sometime later. I was so sad at the time but just happened to come across this and I a sad again. I met Kirk when he applied for work at the Broadmoor in `76. I was the Personnel Mgr. and recommended him for the F&B purchasing job as we opened B´moor West. Over the years we became very close friends on the job and off. I snuck him out on the golf course. He got a hole-in-one but couldn´t tell anyone because he didn´t have golf privileges. We later golfed a lot when he did get the benefit. We coached my son in Little League, played softball together and shared a close friendship until I retired to DC. The last time I saw Kirk he came to DC. One of his employees had been arrested for shooting a weapon in front of the White House and he had to testify and verify the guys employment. I knew he later went to Georgia but didn´t know he returned to the Springs. Reading his obituary brought back so many fond memories.i miss you Cato, gone way to soon.

I am honored to have known and worked with Kirk at the Garden of the Gods Club since 2000. We were both hired on about the sametime. I only got to see him as I was leaving in the morning and he was coming on for the day. His smile and "Good morning or should I say good night?" always made me smile and laugh. He will truely be missed and remembered. My thoughts are with your family at this time. Hopefully remembering what a special person he was and how much he touched all of our lives not to mention how much he loved all of you will ease your pain.

I have taken over the responsibilities as the Director of Engineering for the Garden of the Gods Club of which Kirk Robinson previously filled. In the short time I knew Kirk, he showed me his unique generosity and caring even in his difficult situation. I could not have asked for a better mentor for this position and as an individual. He showed me his deep dedication to God, his family, job and the people he worked with. Thank you Kirk.

Kirk was an amazing person who cared for all who he worked with and displayed that care and concern generously and freely. His kindness, gentleness and generosity of spirit shone through in all that he did. I will cherish the memories working with Kirk here at The Broadmoor and my visit to see him at Callaway Gardens.

I have worked at The Broadmoor since 1971. I met Kirk when we opened the West Hotel Building in 1976..he came as the Food Purchasing Manager for Charles Court and I transferred over to work in Charles Court. From day one, he was dedicated and hard working but moreso, he was kind, courteous, helpful, and had a wonderful sense of humor. We will all miss him.
