L. Mitchell Obituary

L. (Mitch) Mitchell, age 89, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1958 passed away Monday, November 30, 2009. Mitch was born August 29, 1920 in Randolph, NE to Charles and Tillie Mitchell. Mitch married Helen Thomas on February 12, 1945 at Lincoln AFB, NE. Mitch joined the Army Air Force in March, 1942 and attended Aerial Photography School at Lowery AFB, Denver, CO. He also served in Boston, MA, Casper, WY, Newfoundland, Fairmont, NE, Tucson, AZ and Great Bend, KS. He was later assigned to Halesworth Air Base in England until December, 1944. His duties during this assignment included installing camera equipment and flying combat missions as an Arial photographer. After leaving the military, he managed Council Oaks Grocery in West Point, NE and later transferred to Millers Super Market in Colorado Springs until 1968. He retired from the Colorado Springs Utilities in 1984. After retirement he worked for Teacher's Pet delivering school supplies in Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming. Mitch and Helen remained very busy in their retirement by volunteering at St. Mary's Cathedral for 30 years, the Soup Kitchen, Steve Handen's Mesa House, and various charitable organizations. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Mitchell, his brother, Leland Mitchell (Karel) and daughters: Patty Romines (Jim), Mary Kay Jenkins (Tom), and Sue Ann Lee (Paul). Four Grandchildren: Tim, Tamra, Tiffany and Daniel. Three Great Grandchildren: Taeytum, Tristyn, Michael. Special friends: Tim and Linda Boucher He was preceded in death by his parents and great grandson, Tyler. Services will be at St. Mary's Cathedral, 22 W. Kiowa at 9:45AM, Saturday, Dec. 5th, officiated by Monsignor Donald Dunn. Inurnment to follow at St. Mary's Columbarium. Dear Helen and Family,
