Larry Beavers Obituary

January 31, 1945 - December 2, 2008
Larry was born in Gleason, Tennessee and most recently resided in Crystal Park above Manitou Springs, Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty years, Shawne Beavers, four children: his son and daughter, Brent Beavers and Kelly Church, his step-children Rachel Bolenbaugh and Genna Franchi, seven grandchildren, and another one on the way. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Larry ended his struggle with prostate cancer after a long battle of nearly fourteen years. He loved his time in the mountains, reading, music and art. He enjoyed being with friends and his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Throughout his life, Larry contributed his talents and time to each community where he lived. He taught at Coronado High School for many years, and with the mother of his two children, Edna Wallace, co-founded Little Folks Discovery Center in Colorado Springs. Larry and his wife Shawne left Colorado for ten years and together co-owned and operated an adult care home in Arizona for individuals with Alzheimers. Before going on disability, Larry worked in management for the state of Arizona to help develop programs for people with developmental disabilities. Larry returned to Colorado Springs in 2000 to be with family and to live in his beloved mountains. Larry served as president of the board for the local board of the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), and was president to the board of the Crystal Park Home Owners Association. A service to celebrate Larry's life is planned for Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the Stone Chapel at Woodmen Valley Chapel at 250 E. Woodmen Rd. in Colorado Springs (719) 599-8652. In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Colorado Springs NAMI affiliate or to Pikes Peak Hospice.

Shawne

Every now and then, I look out my office window at the Catalina Mountains. I always remember the times when I would pop into Larry's office and find him looking peacefully out at these Mountains. I would always wonder what he saw and what he was thinking. I am thankful to have worked with you both and so fortunate to have gotten to know you. I will continue to think of Larry when I look out at the mountains and I will forever have you in my heart.

Shawne,

I am truly sorry to hear of your recent loss. You may not recall me but I was friends with your daughter Rachel and I knew Mr. Beavers from Coronado where I was a student. I saw you just before you and Larry were to be married and I remember how happy you were. It is hard to believe that over 20 years have gone by since then. I will never forget you or your family. All of you will be in our hearts and prayers.

I miss Larry and you and still have so many great stories to expound on...Larry was a man of great integrity, substance and intellectual character. In times all things will get better, sounds so trite but it is true...All of my Love, Scott

Shawne, just today I discovered you had this guest book on the Gazette for Larry. He had many friends and will be truely missed. I enjoyed the 6 months Larry and I worked together on the mountain and getting to know each other a little better. He was such a caring person and an inspiration to all those he came in contact with. He will be missed. May God be with you and your family during this difficult time.

My friend and brother has taken a flight that those who truly love the Lord long to one day take in our Heavenly Father's own time. Shawne, I love you and my heart and prayers are with you, Rachel and the rest of the family knowing that earth truly has no sorrow that heaven can not heal.
A great fight was fought with dignity, courage and even laughter. I will miss my friend yet, I know that we will all see him again completely healed, smiling and eating soul food....save a seat for me Larry.

The one true love of my life - how am I ever going to do this life without you now? We've shared nearly 21 years of every moment that life brought us, and always with God's help, made it through every rough and difficult thing. But now there's just this huge, empty space that only you fit into. I miss you so much it aches, my love - but I know it was time; you fought so hard to stay here with us all. I am so grateful for all the years we laughed and loved together, hon. Be at peace now, free at last from the struggle, at home, safe and secure with our God. I'll love you always and forever.

I was so sorry, Shawne, to learn of Larry's passing. He touched the lives of so many people, children as well as adults, in warm and wonderous ways. My deepest sympathies to you and yours.

I miss dad so much and keep thinking to myself 'It's been a while since I have talked to him, I better call him' This is going to be a process of missing and learning to be without him, he was a good father to me and I am glad that he and I were so close!
