Larry Finch Obituary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Larry Finch, who coached his alma mater Memphis for 11 seasons after a brief pro basketball career as a player, died Saturday at age 60.

Memphis Tigers spokesman Lamar Chance said Finch died Saturday but he did not know the cause of death.

Finch suffered a debilitating stroke in 2002 at age 51. In October 2010, he was hospitalized for treatment of pneumonia.

As Tigers' coach from 1986 to 1997, he compiled a 220-130 record. He took the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament six times, including a run to the final eight in 1992.

Finch, a guard, played for the Tigers from 1970 to 1973, scoring 1,869 points. The 1973 team lost to Bill Walton-led UCLA in the NCAA championship game despite Finch's 29 points.

Finch's jersey, No. 21, was retired in 1974.

In 2000, the school named the Tigers' practice facility after Finch.

He was born in Memphis and attended Melrose High School.

He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1973, but signed instead with the Memphis Tams of the American Basketball Association. He played professionally with the Tams, which later became the Memphis Sounds, and then the Baltimore Hustlers and the Baltimore Claws.

After his pro career, he went into coaching, and was a Memphis assistant when he was elevated to head coach, succeeding Dana Kirk.

In an interview in April 2008 with The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, Finch said he still loved basketball.

"I watch basketball every night (on TV)," he said at the Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Finch was asked why he helped Walton off the court in the 1973 title game after the UCLA star suffered a sprained ankle. Walton scored 44 points.

"Because he was kicking our butt," he said, laughing.

Grew up watching coach and the tigers beat up on Louisville and other teams. Saw coach out walking by his house before he went in the rehab place. Wish He could see Penny coaching today. To the family and friends of Larry Finch, please accept my heartfelt condolences. The death of a loved one is one of the most devastating experiences a person can face, be assured that you are not alone in your grief. I find much comfort in the Bible where it assures us that "Our Heavenly Father is near to those that are broken at heart, and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. Recalling happy memories of the times you had together will help you to keep smiles on your faces and joy in your hearts.

To Vickie and the Finch Family,
I admire you, you stood by your man, your husband, your best friend, the father of your three beautiful children until the very end. I know it was hard for you to have to work and take care of your husband for so long, it had to be love because you never gave up on him and I admire you for that. I too, had to work and try to take care of the man that I loved dearly, my father. So I know what you went through. I am praying for your strength in these difficult days ahead. May God continue to smile on you.

To the Family of Larry Finch...I've followed Larry's career starting with high school in the 60's. I graduated from Carver High School in 1968. I attended our basketball games especially the ones between Carver & Melrose. We had our stars, Frank Patillio, Willie Gunn, Marvin Brooks, James Abernathy and Herb McNeil, and Melrose had Larry Finch and Ronnie Robinson. Later in the summer, after graduation, I met Larry again in Rexal, a pharmacy back in the day, located at the corner of McLemore and Patton. He would tease me about reading the comic books (Superman & Batman) in the store. Sometimes, when he left First Tennessee Bank in South Memphis, located at Third and Simpson, he would stop and speak if he saw me sitting on the porch. He used to drive a purple car. I think it was a Barracuda. I remembered asking him what he was doing on that end of town because it wasn't Orange Mound. He laughed and said his grand mother lived nearby on Patton Street. I don't know if he was teasing or not. I never watched Memphis State Basketball before, but when Larry and Ronnie started playing for Memphis State, I started watching Memphis State's basketball and have been a Tiger fan ever since. I also remembered the championship game between Memphis State and UCLA. I lost my bet on that game because I had Memphis State all the way with Larry, Ronnie and Dr. K. leading the Tigers. I will truly miss him. I still have newspaper clipping when he played in high school. I kept a scrap book on all of Carver's games from 1964 to 1968, therefore, it had to include Melorse and Larry Finch. May God be with you always.

To Vickie and the entire Finch family, Larry will be missed. He gave so much of himself to all of us. I will always cherish the memories of him at Operation PUSH Memphis' Salute to Larry: "In Honor of a Hero". My late sister, Gwen Sneed, was instrumental in planning the Salute which drew supporters from all over the City and County.Gwen and Larry are both resting in the arms of the Lord. I pray that God will give you and your family the strength to endure this very difficult time.

As a UAB fan and friend, I had the pleasure of being courtside during UAB practices when Coach Finch was coaching assistant alongside Gene Bartow. He was very close to each and every UAB player. He also kicked their tails at "OUT"(the short version of "HORSE". Nobody could touch him. I, myself, held a 0-50 record trying to beat him at OUT. He could shoot from 35 feet....bank shots no problem. He was an inspiration to all at UAB, and a vital part of UABs early success. What a great sense of humor. Here is a photo of the UAB practice jersey that Coach Bartow, Finch, and Corn gave me in 1978. I wore it for years at practices and in pick up games at UABs Bell Gym. It is an original UAB practice jersey from UABs first season. Tons of memories in my old tattered jersey. Priceless. It is my sackcloth. God Bless You, Larry Finch, from your little buddy, "SPACEMAN"(my gym nickname given to me by Coach Finch and 1978 UAB players and Memphis natives, Leon Morris, Larry Spicer, and Darryl Braden. I can still hear them all hollering "SPAAACEMAAAANNNN" and laughing when I came in to the gym. What great memories.

I am blessed to have seen Larry Finch play in 72-73 when I was a young boy, then play a JV game against a Larry Finch coached high school team, then attend Memphis State with Larry Finch on the coaching staff.
But my greatest memory is the night he spoke a few years later at my son's youth YMCA soccer banquet at the university,
Coach Finch completed a Tiger practice, saw the mass of children, couldn't resist, came over and spoke for a few minutes.
He stressed to parents about working hard to raise their children to be good kids. He told the kids to be confident and to do their best in school, sports, and everything else. He told them to take pride in doing their best.
That was the night I really knew who Larry Finch was. God bless the Finch family at this time.

~Always Remember~
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven....Ecclesiastes 3:1
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. I am reminded of a poem entltled....

THE PLAN of the MASTER WEAVER

Our lives are but fine weavings
That God and we prepare,
Each life becomes a fabric planned
And fashioned in His care.

We may not always see just how
The weavings intertwine,
But we must trust the Master’s hand
And follow His design,
For He can view the pattern
Upon the upper side,
While we must look from underneath
And trust in Him to guide…

Sometimes a strand of sorrow
Is added to His plan,
And though it’s difficult for us,
We still must understand
That it’s He who fills the shuttle,
It’s He who knows what’s best,
So we must weave in patience
And leave to Him the rest…

Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why —
The dark threads are as needed
In the Weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
