Laura Wilson Obituary

Laura Ann Wilson, 48, died on January 5, 2014, after a recent surgery.

With a B.A. degree in Music Therapy from CSU, Laura worked as a music therapist for nursing homes, long-term care, and psychiatric facilities all along the Front Range. Whether she was introducing her seniors to rap music, dancing The Macarena, serenading a hospice patient with her guitar or letting her therapy dogs steal the show (and/or someone's piece of cake), Laura had an uncanny ability to connect with her clients. Her unbridled enthusiasm, storytelling, good humor and natural talent endeared her to all. For her beloved clients, she would even break out in a John Denver song (if pressed).

An outdoorswoman, Laura embraced life in Colorado. She enjoyed climbing 14'ers, backpacking, trekking the Colorado Trail and mountain biking. A lifelong daredevil, she added skydiving, a Mt. Rainier Ascent, and Demolition Derby driving to her already colorful resume.

Laura could play piano and guitar by ear. In her early 20's, she toured Canada with a big hair band and later settled down to produce her own CD, Kicking the Tires, a compilation of songs she had written in collaboration with a local friend and lyricist.

Laura will be remembered for her vibrant smile, unwavering friendships, innate musical talent, passion for adventure and dogs, giving and humble spirit and her dedication to family. She left an indelible imprint on the lives of all she touched.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Kenyon Alan Wilson of Woodland Park, her mother, Patricia Ann Lewis of Colorado Springs, her sister and brother-in-law, Julie Marie and Dr. Richard John Ort of Highlands Ranch, her nephews, Jonathan Alexander and Joseph Patrick Ort also of Highlands Ranch and her adoring pooches, Eli, Moose and Baloo.

Her father, Jonathan Forrest Lewis, preceded her in death.

A private Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life reception for family and friends at 4:00 p.m. on January 18th. Please contact family members for details.

I loved to listen to Laura sing when she would be entertaining the residents at Mt. Saint Francis. My mom and I would sing along with her, clap our hands, giggle and smile. Laura brought a lot of joy to us. God Bless her.

Although I did not know Laura, she sounds like she was the center of the universe for so many. They will feel her loss as so many don't take the time to visit our elders in nursing homes let alone sing, play music and bring animals for visits. It is so true that God only takes the best. Thoughts and prayers with her family, friends and those at the nursing homes, long-term care, and psychiatric facilities.

I feel truly blessed to have known Laura. She was so beautiful inside and out. I admired her greatly and she inspired me to be my best self. We shared a love of music and she encouraged me to always keep singing! We were fortunate to have her sing and play at our wedding too. I've been back in Nebraska for almost 7 years now, but kept in touch with Laura through fb. I thank God for knowing her and strive to be like her...she will be remembered forever. Thoughts and prayers from Nebraska.
