Laverne Akers Obituary

Laverne Carol Akers, 82, went home to the Lord on October 6, 2013. She was happily reunited with her beloved husband, Byron, with whom she cherished 56 years of marriage.

Laverne was born on the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies, and grew up surrounded by farms and ranches in Austin, Hotchkiss and Delta. She also spent much of her youth alongside her devoted sister Louise. Quiet and unassuming, Laverne eventually moved to Denver and worked in administration until meeting her future husband. She and Byron were married at the Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver. She dedicated her life to raising her three girls, supporting her husband's career, volunteering and supporting the family businesses.

Laverne's life was one of service and devotion. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and the church was her second home. She was active in Young Life, the United Way, and PEO. She was also an avid tennis player. Many of her happiest days were spent on the courts of Lynmar and the Broadmoor. While involved in many organizations, her primary devotion was to her family, her Heart Sisters, and her many friends. Laverne drew people to her with her beautiful smile and gracious and kind ways. She was frugal, and knew how to a spot a bargain. She never paid retail, a talent passed along to her grandchildren!

Laverne is survived by her daughters, Deborah Akers-Gager (Ray), Kathy Harris (Dave), and Cindi Kyte (Richard); the special children in her life, her grandkids; Ian, Evan, Leah, and Sarah were her cherished blessing. She will be missed by them. Her brother and sister-in-law, John and Anne Akers and her two nephews Tim Akers and Ken Bruce also survive her.

Laverne was the epitome of a lady. She will always be remembered as a woman of extraordinary beauty and kindness. Over the last difficult years of her life, she was gracious and never complained. She displayed a level of dignity and faith that never wavered, and her smile will never be forgotten. Her family will forever be grateful for the loving care from the caregivers of Legacy Hospice, the wonderful staff at Brookdale Place, and her devoted friend Patti Jo Bruggeman.

A service of gratitude for her life will be held on Friday, October 11, at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs.

Debbie, Kathy, Cindi - our sympathies - my brother (Gary) and I really enjoyed working for your parents at the miniature golf venues. They were so nice to us. It is the course of life for our parents to pass, but it never is easy. I feel fortunate to have had such good people in my life.

Debi, Kathy and Cindi,

You have all been in my thoughts and prayers. This photo of your mom is beautiful, and brings such fond memories of growing up. Both your mom and dad have such a place in my heart from days gone by. I hope God gives you strength and peace during this time.
Love,
Robin Wecks Reid
