Lawrence Donahue Obituary

Dr. Lawrence P. Donahue, beloved Internist of Colorado Springs, died August 1, 2006. He was born October 1, 1940, in Chicago, IL, to the late Robert and Joan Donahue. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Donahue, eldest son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Danielle, grandson, Breck (6), granddaughter, Lauren (4), youngest son, Sean and expecting daughter-in-law, Megan. He is also survived by his sister, MaryBeth Hodge of Danville, CA, and his brother, Thomas Donahue of Oswego, IL. Dr. Donahue attended Loyola University in Chicago, IL, from 1958 to 1961 and then graduated from the University of Illinois, School of Medicine in 1965. Following Medical School, he completed his internship in Fresno, CA, at Fresno General Hospital and later his residency in Internal Medicine at the Hines Veteran Affairs Hospital in Chicago, IL. He met and married his wife Sharon while in residency. They had their first son, Brian, prior to moving to Colorado Springs in 1969. Dr. Donahue served as a staff Internist at the United States Air Force Academy Hospital from 1969 to 1971. He then opened Internal Medicine Associates, a private practice, with long-time friend and colleague, the late Dr. William Weller. His son Sean was born in Colorado Springs shortly thereafter. Dr. Donahue remained in private practice for 25 years until joining Colorado Springs Health Partners in 1996 for the remainder of his career. He enjoyed being an active member in the Colorado Springs Clinical Club. He loved Colorado and all it had to offer. Golfing, skiing at Breckenridge with his family, and working in the yard were a few of his favorite pastimes. He treasured spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends and was enthusiastic about playing the piano, reading, and politics. Dr. Donahue's passion in life was Medicine. He received great joy from the intellectual challenges and personal relationships he established with his patients and colleagues. His integrity, dedication, and caring nature comforted and soothed his patients for over 30 years. He died in much the same way he lived his life - with great dignity and selflessness. We will miss his strength and kind and caring spirit. A memorial mass to celebrate his life will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2318 North Cascade Avenue on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. In honor of Dr. Donahue's countless hours of volunteer service and his strong belief in the mission of Pikes Peak Hospice, the family asks that all donations be sent in his name to PPH, 825 East Pikes Peak Avenue, Suite #600, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

Dear Donahue family,

There was no man who could fill his shoes. I was unaware of his passing until a few days ago. I knew he was very ill and wrote him a letter that he will never receive, but hopefully you, his family, will. (I have edited some, for this expression -- I retired as a Foreign Service Officer (U.S. Diplomat) for the U.S.A.

I wrote, Dear Dr. Donahue, Larry: This is a letter from my heart, to tell you not a day goes by that I don't send you good thoughts and prayers and quite selfishly, wish you were here so I could visit you. YOU who did so much for my health and well-being throughout the years! Why I could never say thank you enough for taking such good care of me whenever I was ill or needed surgery, and when I went off to serve our Country all over the World some 20+ years ago, you provided me with the best support ever -- whether it was refilling prescriptions or in speaking to the State Department Medical section to consult. I think you know how much my work in war zones depended upon you and Becky (who probably usually passed on my requests or letters). I knew if I ran into problems (since I ended up serving in so many places where there was not adequate medical care), you were there for me. You had the foresight to send me out with a small kit filled with medicine for everything and anything that might and ultimately did arise. It also gave me peace of mind to know that if something happened to me, I had something in that kit which could and would make me feel much better. I am so sorry that illness found you and wish I had some kind of magic potion to make you feel better -- perhaps you are feeling stronger, I really hope so -- remember we had this saying that I was going to die before you, so keep that in mind because I'm not going anywhere soon!! And let me say here, I feel so blessed that I did get to visit you twice upon my return to the Springs, which was a surprise to me to land here after seeing the world, but I was looking forward to having my good Dr. Donahue treat me, and living once again with the view of Pikes Peak. Ah, even if it cannot be so, I am so glad to have been one of your first patients, and so thankful to have had you in my life. This is something I've wanted to say to you for a long time. You have such special qualities and might I add had such a heavy patient load that all the doctors in CSHP have been overloaded trying to fill-in all your patients for you! You impress your peers. (Two paragraphs deleted out of the letter). Trying to find a new physician has not been pleasant, because none of them can match you, and quite frankly I have been spoiled rotten.! (Paragraph deleted). So, just wanted you to know how much I care about you, because you became a trusted friend along the way, and you are missed. I hope and wish all the best for you my friend, because YOU are the best!!! And I'm one of your strongest fans. With love and sincerity, Diana J. Elliott.

Kindness and time were two things Dr. Donahue always had and shared with with such joy. He was truly the epitome of a gentle man.

Over the years he was a good friend of my husband Jim. When Jim retired and sold his practice (we moved to Oregon), he'd return frequently to the Springs, filling in for vacationing doctors - a favorite assignment was working for Drs. Donahoe and Weller. Oh, how he loved those times together -working side-by-side, sharing medical knowledge and having time to talk and laugh. He just loved those days.

Then, when my Jim got sick, it was Dr. Donahue who was there every step of the way, even when we were in Arizona. He cared so much and did his best for Jim, as he did for all his patients.

I'll always remember those office visits fondly - two friends, one so very ill and the other so very kind. It was an honor to be in their presence.

When Jim died last year, Dr. Donahoe contacted me and spoke at length about their friendship, respect for one another and how unfair illness can be. His words of wisdom and kindness gave me such comfort. I'll always be grateful - for everything this wonderful man did for us.

It's comforting to imagine these two friends in Heaven together - laughing and recalling old times.

The world has lost another great man. He will be missed and remembered with gratitude and love.

If ever there's a time you would like to talk - one widow to another, I'm here for you.

My thoughts are with you.
