Leo Orenstein Obituary

"Uncle" Leo Orenstein, aka "Pop", 95+, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Forest Hills, NY, passed away, Thursday, August 4, 2016. After a rapid decline, he passed peacefully at his home in his own bed, as he wanted.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, August 21 at Temple Shalom, 1534 E. Monument St, in Colorado Springs, (www.templeshalom.com for memorial donations), Rabbi Mel Glazer officiating. Burial was at Sons of Israel Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn, Long Island, NY (joining his wife and family).

Leo was born February, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to Rose and Isidore Orenstein. Leo is survived by his daughter, Hellene (Biedny) Orenstein-Anderson and his grandson, Samuel Anderson, niece who was like a first daughter, Jessica Hatten of Florida, along with Selma's niece and nephew in NY and most importantly, many close cousins and friends; his huge extended family. Leo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, "Uncle" and friend to all. He was preceded in death by his wife Selma Skiba Orenstein in 2010, his sister Beatrice Pincas and his sister-in-law Claire Skiba, and is now among all his cousins and friends of his generation.

A Brooklyn NY native, WWII naval veteran and former CPA, the most important event in his life was his marriage in 1947. He loved to work and retired in 2007, at the age of 86, then moved to Colorado Springs with his wife, claiming he needed to watch their grandson grow up. When his wife passed away, he became involved with Temple Shalom, attending services on Saturday mornings as well as helping to serve Senior lunches. He also joined the YMCA to walk laps, and made many friends who will miss him. He enjoyed reading, walking, spending time with friends, along with seeing his grandson.

A special thank you to the downtown YMCA, Temple Shalom and Interim Hospice for their caring support. Also thank you to Swan-Law Funeral Home for all of the arrangements.
