Leona Pounds-Haggstrom Obituary

Leona (Heiman) Pounds-Haggstrom, 98, departed this life July 20, 2010. She was born in Beloit, Kansas on April 11, 1912, the day before the Titanic went down. Leona was a resident of Colorado Springs since 1939 and was the oldest girl of 11 children born to Anthony and Catherine (Salley) Heiman, immigrant pioneers to the West. Her childhood days were spent on the family farm on the high plains near Beloit, Kansas. Before and after school she and her siblings would weed sunflowers, feed chickens, milk cows, and let the sheep out to pasture. Once her chores were completed it was off to ride the horses and enjoy a dip in the swimming hole. Leona was a graduate of the Flowers College of Cosmetology and was a licensed beautician for 30 years. She was an accomplished baker and enjoyed cooking, reading, and visiting with friends. In retirement she enjoyed dancing. The Two Step and Viennese Waltzes were her favorites. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Goodwill Store and a member of the Colorado Springs Senior Center. Leona was preceded in death by her husbands, Milford 0. Pounds and Virgil Haggstrom; son, M. Mark Pounds; brothers, Paul, Lawrence, John, Eugene, Joseph, and Frederick; and sisters, Rose and Agnes. She is survived by sisters, Marie Heller and Frances Glaser; her two daughters, Connie Esch (Bill), her constant guardian for the past four years, and Barbara Claypoole (Jim); eight grandchildren, the Esches: Lee (Toni), Brian (Regina), Curt (Mary) Julie Ryder (Ted) and Amy Higgins (Dan) and the Claypooles: Elizabeth, Cathlynn, and Valorie Kelley (Kevin); eleven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will long remember her beautiful twinkling blue eyes and her statuesque blond beauty. God rest her Soul and celebrate her return to those she loves on the other side. She has loosened the ties that bound her. Hallelujah. There will be a vigil service from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Monday evening, July 26, 2010 and a rosary at 7:00 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2318 N. Cascade Ave. Colorado Springs. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 1002 S. Hancock Ave. Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Mark Pounds Memorial Scholarship Fund Memorial Hospital, School of Radiology Attn: Elaine Ivans 1400 E. Grammy, I will miss your smile.....I am so grateful to have known the woman you were and your joy for life, especially your laugh and the stories of your early days and how you met Grandpa. You are thought of everyday and I am so thankful for the memories and the times we spent together. Your strength, love and dedication to your family will always hold a special place in my heart. You can now rest in peace with those that have gone before you. I love you!

Aunt Leona was a special woman. I always looked forward to spending time with her. Her laugh was contagious. My Mom is her sister and I took delight in their loving bickering over the silliest of things. It was like they were young again when they got together. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of spending time in Colorado with Aunt Leona, Uncle Mil and Mark. It is of great comfort to know that they are all reunited now. But how we will miss our Aunt Leona! She was as graceful and faithful a woman as I have ever known. Until we meet again safely home in Jesus' loving arms... be at peace Aunt Leona!

Leona was my grandmother, and she was a joy to have in my life. She will be surely missed! I take peace in knowing that she is reunited with our loved ones who have passed before us Mark, Grandpa (Mil), Virgil, and many of her brothers and sisters who have passed through this world. Leona was our family's last tie to the generation who lived through WWII and the depression, She lived her life to the highest of moral standards, through difficult challenges she taught us all to work hard, devote ourselves to God, and survive with love and humility. Rest in peace Grandma--I hope you are dancing on clouds... Love from Julie R.
