LeRoy Fettig Obituary

A Funeral Mass for LeRoy P Fettig, 66, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 am, Thursday, August 28, 2014 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Killdeer, ND with Father Darnis Selvanayakam celebrating. Burial will take place at the Killdeer Cemetery following the funeral mass.

Visitation for LeRoy will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a prayer service being held at 6:00 p.m.

LeRoy passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 in his home in Dickinson surrounded by his family.

LeRoy Phil Fettig was born November 16, 1947 in Killdeer, ND, son of Philip Joseph Fettig and Angeline (Kary) Fettig. He attended school in Killdeer where he excelled in basketball, football and track, winning several state titles while running for the Killdeer Cowboys. LeRoy also competed in High School Rodeo and was named the Reserve Saddle Bronc Champion at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Ogallala, NE. He graduated from Killdeer High School in 1965.

LeRoy attended Casper College on a rodeo scholarship and later transferred to NDSU where he continued to rodeo for the Bison. Following his graduation from NDSU in 1969, LeRoy taught Vocational Ag in Mandaree, ND for three years. He spent the next six years on his ranch northeast of Hebron, ND raising cattle.

After leaving his ranch, LeRoy moved to Dickinson and began working as an Oil and Gas Landman. After spending several years working as a Landman in the oil and gas industry, LeRoy developed his own company, Williston Basin Oil and Title Brokerage. LeRoy always said he didn't work for oil companies, but rather worked for the land and mineral owners from whom he was leasing.

LeRoy married Georgette Beckert in 1968. Two children were born to this union, Phil LeRoy Fettig and Alicia Lyn Fettig. Phil and Alicia were shining stars in LeRoy's life.

On August 3, 1989, LeRoy married his soul mate, Carla Herberholz. LeRoy embraced Carla's daughter, Missy, like a daughter of his own.

LeRoy, along with his uncles Jack Fettig and Ray Fettig, ran bucking horses in the Badlands north of Killdeer. LeRoy continued to raise and promote Fettig Rodeo Broncs, as his father, Phil Fettig, had prior to his passing. LeRoy actively selected his best bucking mares and bred them to proven bucking studs of Wildman Rodeo and Steve Sutton Rodeo. His commitment to improved breeding paid off when his mare, Looking Good, won the 2013 World Class Bucking Horse Association Saddle Bronc of the Year. LeRoy was also named the 2013 World Class Stock Contractor of the Year. LeRoy valued the friendships he grew while competing and providing stock at rodeos.

LeRoy treasured the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing his stories, his experiences, and life lessons with each of them. They are better people because of those conversations with their dad and grandpa. LeRoy was a generous, selfless man, and he provided a life for them that he filled with quality memories and values they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

LeRoy believed in leaving the world a better place. He and Carla planted and replanted thousands of trees every spring for the last 30 years. LeRoy was always planning where he could slip in another row or two of trees. He would only drive green tractors and 'Fettig Red' trucks.

LeRoy is survived by his wife Carla of Dickinson; daughters, Alicia (Wally Blankenship) Fettig of Killdeer, Missy Bruce of Dickinson; son, Phil (Sherry) Fettig of Colorado Springs, CO; mother, Angeline (Kary) Fettig of Rapid City, SD; sisters, Rita (Mark) Jacob of Rapid City, SD, and Linda (Craig) Fischer of Rapid City, SD; brother-in-law, Dave Vandermay of Long Valley, SD; grandchildren, Nicole Clemings, Kayler Rayne Brady and Grayson Fettig; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his father, Phil Fettig; sister, Anita Vandermay; brothers, Alan Fettig and Jim Fettig; and nephew Damon Brooks.

LeRoy requested memorial gifts go to the Wounded Warrior Project and St. Joseph's Heartland Hospice.

Each time we embrace a memory, we meet again with those we love.. for the heart never forgets.

I am so sorry for your loss~you don't know me, but my uncle was Sylvester Fettig, also born in ND, so probably related in some way. He was married to my aunt Tena Klaman Fettig. I saw your name and just had to send my heartfelt condolences.
