Lewis Worthing Obituary

Lewis (Lew) K. Worthing, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Main Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. Capt. Worthing served in the U.S. Navy for 33 years, and retired as a Captain in 1974. He served as a landing craft officer and ship-loading officer in the Pacific during World War II. He commanded the USS Howard D. Crow (Destroyer Escort), USS Compton (Destroyer), and USS Cascade (Destroyer Tender). He served as the Station Commander of Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines during the Vietnam War and Station Commander of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Capt. Worthing helped plan the Cheyenne Mountain NORAD complex while stationed at Ent AFB. Some of his other duty stations included: SHAPE (Paris, France), Defense Nuclear Agency (Washington, D.C.), Dugway Proving Grounds (Salt Lake City, UT). Lew was a long-time member of the Retired Officer's Association, Navy Retired Officers Association, and the Navy League of Colorado Springs. He had been very active in the planning of the Colorado Springs Navy Balls. Born in Bridgeport, CT, he grew up predominately in and around Columbia, SC. Lew was predeceased by his wife (Doris Jane Worthing) of 59 years. He is survived by his son, Lewis K. Worthing III of Woodbine, GA, and his daughter, Jane F. Kierson, of Jones, OK. Additionally, he left four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home Mausoleum, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO.
