Lloyd Johnson Obituary

Lt. Col. Lloyd F. Johnson, USAF Retired. Lloyd Francis Johnson, Sr., was born in Greenwood Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on September 27, 1925, the eighth and youngest child of Lloyd Bruce Johnson and Mary Jane Kenney. After graduating in 1943 from the Milton Hershey School, Hershey, Pennsylvania, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps to pursue his dream of flying. He became a fighter pilot. His 32 years in the U.S. Air Force included tours in Korea and Vietnam, a year of Navy exchange duty flying missions off the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga, three years at NATO Allied Headquarters in Naples, Italy, and participation in the development of air-to-air fueling procedures. He was particularly fond and proud of his many missions in the P-51 Mustang. Upon retiring from the USAF, he embarked on a second career of 20 years working in real estate for Walker & Company Realtors. He had resided since 1975 in the Black Forest, Colorado. He was a member of the Milton Hershey School Alumni Association, the National Order of Daedalians, and the Military Officers Association of America. He enjoyed conversation with everyone he met. He passed peacefully at Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colorado, on February 23, 2007, after months of declining health following surgery. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ella; his children, Amy Jablonovsky of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Claire Fitzgerald of Shawnee, Kansas; Lloyd Johnson, Jr., of Cedar Park, Texas; and Carolyn Busacca of Poughkeepsie, New York; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Caitlin, and Sean. Military funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2007, at 2:00 PM, the Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910; viewing from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Interment will be Monday, March 5, 2007, at 11:00 AM, Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.

Uncle Lloyd was the youngest brother in my mothers family and the last surviving member. I remember when he visited our home while on military leave durind the Korean War. His family would send newspaper clippings to us telling of being shot down in air combat and living to tell about it. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Being of the same age group and Greenwood township Johnson ancestry, Lloyd and I had some farm kids relationships, 1925-35. He was in Johnsonville, two miles east of Bells Landing, where the Johnson dynasty began in Clearfield County near where many of the earlier annual Johnson picnic reunions were subsequently held. I believe that Robert Wayne Johnson was closer to Lloyd, maybe because they were full time neighbors; I was part time on the neighboring Garry Johnson farm.

My sympathy to Mrs. Johnson and all of Lloyd's family. I don't think I ever met Lloyd, but his father and my grandmother were first cousins. Lloyd sent us some memories of the Johnsons for a reunion in 1980 in PA. I often get up to Greenwood Township, Clearfield County, where Lloyd was from. Once again,my condolences.

Our first encounter with Lloyd was when he called to see if our shop worked on kerosene heaters. After that it turned into a wonderful friendship. We enjoyed listening to all the stories of his military (flying) days. You could see it in his eyes....pride of being part of our military, especially being a fly boy. We will miss Lloyd's stories and we will cherish all the wonderful memories Lloyd has given us.
