Lois Smart Obituary

Lois Smart, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, 2014. She was surrounded by loved ones.

Lois was born on January 9, 1953 in Junction City, Kansas. She was the daughter of George and Virginia Lahr, who are deceased. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Sanchez; a grandson, Ethan Sanchez and two brothers, Jerry and Fred Lahr.

Lois is survived by her husband of more than 30 years, Larry Smart; four brothers, Roy, Ed, Lester, and Mitchell; her nine children: Danny, Virginia, Snowdrop, Jody, Chipper, Damien, Roxann, Tabitha and Lindsey; 19 grandchildren, and countless friends.

Being the daughter of a soldier, Lois spent much of her childhood living in a variety of places around the world. While she spent her younger years in the Springs, she enjoyed growing up in France and Germany before moving back to the states and re-settling in Colorado Springs. As the only daughter in a houseful of boys, Lois learned how to be tough. This served her well as she grew up and started a family of her own. Lois always wanted a large family. After 10 children, she continued to grow her family as she repeatedly opened her home to the Hillside community. She was well known in the neighborhood for her generous heart and for helping anyone who needed help. She also loved animals and much to her husband's frustration she often took in homeless animals to give them a safe refuge. This includes raising some of the more exotic animals in the neighborhood.

Lois loved to laugh and spend time with her family and friends. Her favorite moments were seeing her children together, reminiscing about the past and seeing her loved ones laugh. Her house was always bustling with energy and life. Many will remember her for her wild sense of humor, her generous heart and infectious laugh.

She will be deeply missed by her family and the Hillside Community, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her. In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, please set aside time to laugh with the ones you love.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, June 20 at 1 p.m. at Swan-Law Funeral Directors - 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs.

I love Mama Lois she and her family have been a big part of my life since snowdrop and I were kids. I could always count on her for advice no matter how many years passed before we would cross paths again we would pick up right away as if no time had passed. She sure loved telling you what to do no matter your age . She was a wonderful woman whom I am grateful to have known. My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole sanchez/smart family. Love to u all.
