Lonnie Brooks Obituary

Lonnie Brooks, a Louisiana-born blues musician well-known for his version of the Robert Johnson song "Sweet Home Chicago," died Saturday, April 1, 2017, according to multiple news sources. He was 83.

In a news statement Sunday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel praised Brooks as “a Chicago blues legend with a towering talent and soulful style that won him legions of fans across the country and around the world. His celebrated career inspired generations of music lovers, garnered numerous awards, and brought him from the clubs of Chicago’s West Side to the concert halls of Europe and beyond.”

Brooks was born Lee Baker Jr. Dec. 18, 1933, in Dubuisson, Louisiana. He was introduced to the blues by his banjo-plucking grandfather. Later, in the early 1950s, he decided to pursue a musical career after moving to Port Arthur, Texas, where he heard live sets by blues legends including T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, and others.

During his solo career, Brooks called himself Guitar Jr., but he dropped the moniker after moving to Chicago in 1960 because Luther Johnson had called himself Guitar Jr. long before Brooks. It was in Chicago that Lee Baker became Lonnie Brooks.

Brooks played clubs on Chicago's South Side and West Side, as well as in joints in neighboring Gary and East Chicago, Indiana.

His debut album, "Broke an' Hungry," was recorded in 1969. Six years later, his album "Sweet Home Chicago" featured the title track that made him famous. Successive albums included "Bayou Lightning" (1979), "Turn on the Night" (1981), "Live at Pepper's" (1985), and "Satisfaction Guaranteed" (1991)."

Brooks made appearances in two films, "Blues Brothers 2000" and "The Express." He also made a cameo appearance on an episode of TV's "Hee Haw."

Brooks also co-authored the book "Blues for Dummies" along with son Wayne Baker Brooks and Michael "Cub" Coda, who wrote the Brownsville Station hit "Smokin' in the Boys Room."

Brooks is survived by two sons, the blues artists Ronnie Baker Brooks and Wayne Baker Brooks.

I had the honour to meet and be the support band for the Lonnie Brooks Band in Adelaide Australia in the late '80s. After we'd done our sound checks Lonnie took everyone to the bar for drinks. Because he wasn't used to Australian money he kind of slid a 50 to the barmaid with a look of "don't hurt me if this isn't enough". She pushed it back and grabbed the 20 and told him this is the one you're looking for. Lonnie, Ronnie and the rest of the band were an inspiration to be around off stage and an inspiration to be around on stage. My heart and love go to Ronnie and the rest of the family as the world has not only lost a fantastic musician but it's lost a beautiful man. Oh, I might add, because of Lonnie Brooks I went on stage half pissed that night.

The family of Willie Thomas of Port Arthur, Texas send their condolences to the Lonnie Brooks family. Cousin Lonnie was my father's nephew but I remember him once when he came to Port Arthur for a visit. He intrigued us most of the night as he talked about his life, his music and his travels. I'm met Lonnie when he was playing the guitar and Hammond Indiana and was one of the nicest people I ever met he seemed to have a way to cross any racial barrier and open his heart of kindness up to me and invited me to his house to play Guitars with him as I introduced myself as a guitar player too. Somehow lost the phone and address. Now I regret that I never did do that as I became extremely busy trying to survive and start a business and was later injured in a construction accident in 2002 and am under VA care since then but I'm out of the woods. I guess we all have to go to see the master in the sky someday. I'm sure the man upstairs well received him and my condolences to his family. Lonnie was just a great guy but extraordinary because of his guitar playing and outgoing kindness. He was an inspiration to keep me going and however I sold my guitar back then for a studio recording and started a business these are three guitars but I built so I guess I'll just put them on here cuz it reminds me of a beautiful a person and I wish he could have seen these and played with me. I just opened my own recording studio on the near southside. 4 tripple nickle S.Halsted ST Chicago, IL.as (HOLLYWOODSTARSSTUDIO.COM. DAVYROCKSTAR.COM

The only thing holding us back to be a musician now is gravity so we should get up and play a tribute.

I saw Lonnie play several times in the 90s, in Rockford, Champaign-Urbana and Chicago. He put on a great show. As I recall, his son Ronnie played guitar in his band at the time. I honestly hadn't thought about him in years, but seeing his obit brought back some great memories.
