September 26, 2021

Loren Paul Nelson, Jr., 76, of Bedford, NH and former longtime resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH on Sunday, September 26th, 2021.

He was born in Anadarko, OK on May 4th, 1945 to the late Irene (Koch) and Loren Paul Nelson, Sr. He was raised in Oklahoma City, OK and graduated from U. S. Grant High School. He went for his Undergraduate studies in Applied Mathematics at Oklahoma City University and received his Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Missouri.

Paul was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1967 to 1988 where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served as an instructor at the United States Air Force Academy, commander of the GEODS site on White Sands Missile Range, and was integral in the development and execution of USAF Space Command where he served the remainder of his military career. After retirement from the Air Force, he went on to work as a defense contractor for GTE, Aerospace, and as a civil servant until his final retirement in 2015.

Paul was also a committed follower of Christ who served faithfully at First Southern Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Black Forest in Colorado Springs. Paul taught many years of Sunday School, was an exemplary deacon, and used the gifts God gave him to serve on numerous essential church committees. He was passionate about the Gospel and missions and supported many evangelism endeavors and missionaries around the world. He was a generous believer and wanted to see the advancement of God's kingdom. He served as a teaching leader for Bible Study Fellowship for over a decade and was committed to teaching and training all people in how to study God's Word.

Along with his parents, Paul was pre-deceased by his brother, John Nelson.

He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie (Wynn) Nelson; his daughter, Lori and her husband Kevin Peters; his son, Loren P. Nelson, III; eight grandchildren, Brandon and his wife Jennifer Peters, Alisa and her husband Peter-John Philbrick, Ashley and her husband Andrew Weaver, Ryan Peters, Katherine Nelson, Jonathan Peters, Davis Nelson, and Matthew Peters; three great-grandchildren, Alexis and Aurora Peters and Anthony Weaver; a sister, Susan and her husband Richard Whomble; sister-in-law, Linda Nelson; along with his nieces, Stephanie Dawson and Yolanda Nelson.

I am so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I knew Paul from our high school days at US Grant in Oklahoma City. And from watching him play baseball for the Grant Generals. It's hard to grieve the death of someone so loved. I have lost both of my parents and my only sibling as well as my oldest son. I get through my days remembering the happy days when they were in my life--probably just like Paul's family.

Just remember that God loves us and will give us peace and the strength to carry on.

Love always, Ron Lambert

Sorry to say we just learned of this sad news. As one of the "older" cousins of our family, we had grown up with Paul always around. It was a very proud moment for both of us when he swore me into the Air Force almost 50 years ago. Our love and prayers to you, Marjorie. Paul will be missed dearly.

I was so sad to hear about Paul! What a kind and loving person he was. It always meant so much to me when he and Marjorie would stop by my model to say hello. They would always brighten my day. They started out as clients but soon became cherished friends. Marjorie, hopefully we can get together soon so I can give you a big hug. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you!

The first time my wife and I attended First Baptist Church of Black Forest (now Cross Fellowship Church), I had questions. Who did I ask? Paul. Why? He just looked approachable and knowledgeable. And so he was!
And when we took a three semester Navigators course with Paul and Marjorie (eight of us in total) they were pretty close to the "perfect couple." Marjorie said that when they first started dating "Paul treated me like a queen" and had done so ever since.
Peter said to make the case for Christ "with gentleness and respect." Paul did all that. He was brimming with knowledge of Scripture but was also very humble. If he needed to correct you regarding Scripture, he always did it in that manner.
I never told him, but as a result of the time we spent together in that Navigators class, I was inspired to do what Paul had been doing for years and years - getting up early every morning and spending time in Scripture, devotions and prayer. I have been doing that faithfully ever since, thanks to Paul.
Paul, we miss you greatly.

In so many ways, Paul was a man little boys want to be — and old men wished they had been. Paul was always a delight to work with during his GTE/Aerospace daysalways thinking through very difficult issues and providing solutions. But more than that, his belief and faith in the Lord shined every single day. Our most sincere and heartfelt condolences.
