Lovelyn Marie Hughes was born on 11/25/1932 and passed away peacefully in her home in Colorado Springs, CO on 05/04/2023 with her beloved husband of 70 years, Pat, at her side. Lovelyn was born in Lake City, Florida to Bernard and Quinelle "Sunny" English. She grew up in St. Louis, Mo and Ft Worth, Tx, graduating from Paschal High School before going on to Ward-Belmont College and Southern Methodist University where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and in 1952 graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education. On June 6, 1953, Lovelyn was married to Robert Patterson "Pat" Hughes in the First Methodist Church, Ft. Worth, Tx by Rev Gaston Foote, who also christened both their children, Bud and Shari, in the years to come. Lovelyn joined Pat while he was stationed in Germany, sailing across the Atlantic on the USS America for 11 days. Among their overseas adventures was the birth of their first child who was born in the Army Hospital in Stuttgart. Upon returning to the US with a new baby girl, Lovelyn and Pat drove their ocean-cargo-delivered 1956 VW around the country to family that was eager to see them all. It was the beginning of a life filled with wonderful adventures. There would be many new places to live and with each new place, many warm and wonderful friends along the way. Settled in Texas, Lovelyn and Pat lived in Ft Worth, Morton, San Saba, Hamilton, Hamlin, Hereford, Round Rock, Belton, and Rockport. Teaching was Lovelyn's life's work, and she had a special passion to generate an excitement for reading in her students. During her some 30 years of teaching, she undoubtedly taught, guided, and encouraged hundreds of students.
Many summers Lovelyn spent alongside her mother, Sunny, running Camp Wanaka, a girl's camp in Woodland Park, Co, where she discovered the love of hiking in the meadows and the mountains. Lovelyn was the one who knew the name of every wildflower along the path and delighted in sharing that with her fellow hikers. She was also the one who played TAPS when campers were settling in for the night as a way to melodically signal that "day was done". Lovelyn frequently spoke of how she never tired of the "purple majesty" mountains that she felt grateful to see everyday.
Lovelyn has been a lifelong, active, and devoted member of the United Methodist Church, most recently at Mountain View United Methodist Church of Woodland Park, Co where she made the inspiring Walk to Emmaus. She and her husband, Pat, are credited with establishing a First Methodist Church in Round Rock, Tx "from the ground up", for which she was always very proud. Lovelyn was a devoted wife, mother, and friend and she was always at the ready to help a person in need. She drove countless friends to doctor's appointments or to get their chemotherapy; she made numerous casseroles, cakes, and cookies for a grieving family; she loved to entertain friends for Bridge or Mahjong or to just be together. She and Pat made friends where ever they went by joining into the community around them, by contributing to the greater good, and by truly living the power of service and connection to something bigger than themselves.
Lovelyn is survived by her husband of 70 years, Pat Hughes, of Colorado Springs, CO, and 2 children, her daughter, Shari H. Scott of Santa Fe, NM, and her son, James "Bud" Hughes and his wife, Nusi of Keller, Tx; Three grandchildren, Tyler Scott of Lubbock, Tx, Jake Hughes of Highland Village, Tx, and Haley Jane Hughes of College Station, Tx.
A Celebration of Life for Lovelyn Hughes will be held on May 20, 2023 at 11 am at Brookdale Skyline in Colorado Springs, Co and on May 27, 2023 at 11 am at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Woodland Park, Co.

Lovelyn was a lovely person. Good to everyone she met. I consider myself lucky to have known her, hiked, played bridge and mah jong with her. Lovelyn and Pat were the most welcoming couple I have ever known. Love you both, we will all miss her.

Lovelyn was one of the most positive persons to know and always was there for others. I have not seen her for years as we moved from Woodland Park but I always looked forward to summer when they returned. She lived a great life with Pat.

From the moment I met Lovelyn I knew she had been given a most appropriate name by her parents...for indeed she was lovely through and through. I feel so blessed to have had the privilege to know her and always receive a warm welcome and bright smile each time we met. My deepest sympathy to Pat and family. Rest in peace sweet Lovelyn, thank you for your friendship and support.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Lovelyn. I remember that she and Pat were helping run the camp when I was there, and they were so fun! She was a lovely lady in every way.

This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful friend. Lovelyn welcomed us from the first time we met she and Pat and continued this all the time we attended church with them. She will be missed and remembered.
