Luanne Gilbert Obituary

Luanne Gilbert died peacefully at home in Berkeley, CA, after a long battle with progressive M.S. A Colorado Springs native & CSHS graduate, she received both BA and MA from Mills College (a prize-winning poet there), and a library degree from CalBerkeley. Married in 1955, and later widowed, she returned to Berkeley with her first daughter, remarried and had two more children. A career librarian dedicated to literacy tutoring and equity of service to all, her final position was Acting County Librarian for Alameda County. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling anywhere wildflowers grew, and became an expert. She was an ardent classical music supporter. As a philanthropist, she supported FINCA, Heifer, and many others. Contributions in her name may be made to either. She is survived by three children (Jennifer Gilbert, Jill Gonzalez, and Geoff Gilbert), four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, siblings Tom Edquist of Littleton and Judy Hartl of Philadelphia, three nephews and two nieces, and her long-time companion Eleanor Crary. Her parents Rachel Thomas Edquist and Raymond Ossian Edquist, Colorado natives, pre-deceased her. Family gathered in Berkeley October 23 to remember her.

I have such fond memories of Luanne, both as a colleague and as a supervisor. She was a delight to work with - kind, gracious, great sense of humor. Our thoughts are with Eleanor and with Luanne's family as you grieve her loss.

Although Luanne was a year ahead of me in high school, we worked on several plays together as well as the school paper. She was always positive in her thinking, upbeat and eager to help. One of the brightest students Colorado Springs High School ever produced! I loved hearing of her adventures at Mills College when she returned after her first year.
Rest in Peace, Luanne. I shall always remember you.

To a wonderful lady who always had a smile on her face and thoughtful of others. I had the pleasure of working with Luanne in Alameda County Library Administration. She will be greatly missed.

Luanne was my stepmother, although I never lived with her. She was married to my father, Raymond Gilbert for about 20 years, after my mother and father divorced. Luanne was always very sweet and kind to me, and I have many fond memories of her. She was a remarkable woman!
