Dear Family of Makenzie Taylor Bourdelais,
I recently mailed a sympathy card to The Springs Funeral Services to be forwarded to you. I want to ensure that you received my message and to provide some follow-up information.
Following is what I wrote in the card:
July 14, 2017
Words cannot adequately express my feelings of sorrow on reading in the Gazette last evening about the death of Makenzie. Her death at such a young age, and the cause of her death, are tragic.
I want to thank you for your courage in sharing the cause of Makenzie's death, and for asking people to honor her by getting help, if needed, and to not ever try heroin.
As the Coordinator of the Coalition for Prevention, Addiction Education, and Recovery (CPAR). I want to let you know there is a large group of people in our community who will honor Makenzie by working hard to prevent needless deaths due to prescription opioid drug misuse and heroin abuse.
Makenzie will not be forgotten.
Wishing you hope and peace during this difficult time,
Mary Steiner, RN

I recently facilitated a CPAR meeting that was attended by Mayor John Suthers, two DEA agents, members of the coalition and community at large. Mayor Suthers provided the opening remarks and I provided updates regarding CPAR. The next agenda item was to show a documentary developed by the FBI and DEA entitled "Chasing the Dragon - the Life of an Opiate Addict". However, prior to showing the film I opted to read Makenzie's obituary to those in attendance. I did this because I wanted to honor Makenzie and to reinforce the importance of the work ahead of us in addressing the opioid epidemic in our community. Again, Makenzie will not be forgotten.
On behalf of Community Health Partnership, please let me know if there is anything we can do to support you during this difficult time.
Respectfully,
Mary A. Steiner, RN
