I'm so happy to have found this site, although it's been six years since Mrs. Hopkins's death. She was my first-grade teacher in Bayreuth Germany during school year 1951-52. The Army post was a small one, and our class consisted of 1st-third grades. She handled the combined class with absolute assurance and expertise. I don't remember ever feeling I was at a disadvantage. She taught me to read, opening up an exciting new world that would eventually lead to my Ph.D. in English. It was during that year that Marguerite and Roy were married. I remember her telling us that her name had changed, that she was no longer Miss Horstman. Of course, we were all confused. Why on earth would she change her name in the middle of the year? But we were reassured to discover that she was the same supportive and inspiring teacher we had grown to rely on. What a wonderful way to begin one's formal education!
