Mark McConkie Obituary

McConkie
MARK LEWIS MCCONKIE
June 29, 1948 - June 20, 2018
Mark Lewis McConkie, son of Bruce R. and Amelia McConkie, passed away on June 20, 2018. He died with his wife (Mary Ann Taylor) and his nine children at his side.
Mark was born on June 29, 1948 in Salt Lake City. He knew that growing up in his parents' home--where love and the teachings of Christ were the motive force--was one of his greatest blessings. He stood on the shoulders of giants.
He graduated from West High before serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. When he returned he attended Brigham Young University. There he earned the hand of Mary Ann Taylor and two degrees. He received his doctorate from the University of Georgia, and then spent the next 41 years teaching at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In that capacity he produced over a hundred scholarly publications and presentations in both national and international scholarly forums.
His was an inquisitive and capable mind, and he loved filling it with poetry, music, history, and literature. The bulk of his attention went to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, which he taught by precept and example. He authored four books, preached thousands of sermons, and ministered to any within the reach of his long arms.
His greatest work was his family; his greatest support his devoted wife. Together they are the parents of nine children: Mark (Charlotte), Taylor (Wendy), Matthew (Shelley), David (Ramona), Ann Marie Giles (Matthew), Rebecca Smylie (Levi), Sara Lohmeier (Matt), Michael (Lauren) and Daniel (Sarah). They are expecting their 45th and 46th grandchildren this summer.
He will be remembered for his certitude, his integrity, his quick wit and cheerful disposition. He knew how to be happy, and his legacy-encapsulated by a kiss on the forehead and the admonition to "carry on"-continues to inspire those who now stand on his noble shoulders.
Memorial services will be on Monday, June 25, at 11 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 150 Pine Avenue, Colorado Springs. Visitations will be held on Sunday, June 24, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Monday June 25, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the same location. He will be interred in the Salt Lake Cemetery next to his family.

On the fun side, Mark was a leader in the Mormon community, and something of a prepper, and he took me to their prep center in Southeast Colorado Springs and showed me how it was done. He also introduced me to their employment center, where Mormons who needed work were taught how to write their resumes and cover letters, how to interview, and how to conduct effective job searches. Everything about Mark was socially practical and responsible. He taught me that in prepping you had to include sugar and spices, especially dried onions and garlic and dried peppers, since these stimulated the appetite during long periods of privation. During periods of privation, people actually lose interest in eating, and that has to be stimulated. These were lessons I have never forgotten.

Dr. Mark McConkie was a bright light in the world of Management and Organizational science and was my colleague at the International Conference for Advances in Management (ICAM), later the International Association for Applied Management (IAAM) for 18 years. He was a just a moral man who was interested with me in the issues of public morality and civic virtue, and he got my best article ever published as the masthead piece for a major journal out of Penn State. He was one of the most stalwart Christian men I ever met. I have missed him so much these five years or more.

Bishop McConkie honored my zone by coming to speak to us in a Zone meeting in Colorado Springs back in 1982. It was there I first learned from him that the whole world was Eden and the garden was Eastward in Eden. I told him of my interaction with his father during a family home evening I had attended just before going into the MTC in Provo and how his dad just stared at me the whole time. He laughed and said how his dad got a kick out of doing that because people became convinced he could see right through them. That was just his sense of humor. I was forever grateful that Mark came to speak to us that day.

I was shocked to just learn of Mark's passing. We were colleagues at UCCS many years ago and I valued his friendship and wise counsel. I know his light will continue to shine through his family and those whose life he touched.

I was saddened to receive a copy of Mark's obituary in an email. I knew Mark all through elementary school. He was always kind, shy and felt awkward during those early years in Wilford Stake. We enjoyed a friendship that I have treasured all of these years. I've seen Mark a few times, just to say hello after some speaking engagement. I grabbed a picture of Mark from sixth grade. These are the school crossing guards. Mark is on the top row (being the tallest) farthest on the left.

Your Kindness will never be forgotten. I often think back to my 3 months of living in your basement in Colorado Springs while I looked for a job, found a home and became reunited with my wife and kids. It was a trying time in my life, but your kind words of encouragement got me through. You set a wonderful example of how to live the gospel and what priorities really look like. Thank you for your example.

We are so sorry we were out of state when Mark died and were unable to attend his viewing and funeral. What a wonderful example he and his family were to his Bishop and wife! We loved to speak with him whenever possible to bask in the light of his knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is a hole in our hearts that was left with his passing! May his family find peace and comfort in this time of loss and sorrow.

Dear Mary Anne and family,
Mark was my husband's Bishop when he was a teenager. His influence had such a magnificent impact on Brad and his parents, Ralph & Flora. Beyond that wonderful friendship, Mark also helped my own parents. My brother Matt was killed in a freak work - related accident in Delta, CO in July 1987. Mark sent a letter to my parents, Bob & Laurie Esplin. It gave them them so much comfort, encouragement, and guidance. I am eternally grateful for the impact you & Mark have had on my family. May you be blessed with the comfort and peace of the Holy Spirit during this time of sadness, separation, and loss. And may your testimonies and the prayers of all of us hold you up as you continue on this journey of life without that precious man. God bless each of you.
Prayers, love & hugs,
Suzanne Esplin Miller

Mary Ann and the entire McConkie family, we truly mourn with you at the loss of this great elect man, a light gone out of the world, leaving a gaping void. His love for the Lord and understanding of His gospel has brought light and truth to so many. He was so kind! I loved his answer to how he was, "I'm happy!" He will be sorely missed by all of us. We pray for that comfort which passeth all understanding for you all.

Mark was a kind and remarkable man. He and Mary Ann were some of our first church friends when we moved to Colorado. Once when we were at church and noticed him speaking to my husband and remarked he is a college professor and Dave is a mechanic yet you would never have known there was a difference. They were friends and enjoyed speaking to each other. He will be missed. My love and condolences to all who knew and loved him.

Thinking of you and your family at this time. May you receive the comfort which brings all understanding. It is thru the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we gain understanding and comfort. God bless all of your family. Mark's and Mary Ann's kindness when we stayed at their home years ago touched our lives for good. He knew a lot about the history of the family and the church which we appreciated his sharing with us. Now he is with family who has gone before him. Hope he has a good time with his parents, siblings, and his cousin Bill Fife and other relatives. Heavenly Father has a purpose for his calling him home at this time. My prayers are with you as individuals and as a family unit. God bless and comfort you.

I used to sneak into BYU education week just to hear him and his brother preach! He was a preacher of righteousness, the best I have ever heard. I always wanted to preach just like him. I later wrote a book about missionary work that was based on what I learned from him, his brother Joseph, and his father. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. It makes me so grateful that I knew him and got to sit and learn at his feet.
