Mark Nelson, formerly from Security/Colorado Springs, passed away in Ft. Myers, FL Aug. 12, 2023 after a lengthy hard-fought battle with heart, lung, and hip issues. He was born in Topeka, KS Aug. 26, 1954. His family moved to Security, CO in 1960 so his father, Bob, could teach at North Junior High, and his mother, Niki, could teach at Pike Elementary School- both in Colorado Springs. Mark graduated Widefield H.S. in 1972.
Mark loved anything connected to cars and motorcycles. He helped with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb for many years. Other jobs included working in a body shop, groundskeeper at golf courses in Aspen and at Patty Jewett in Colorado Springs, and 4 years in the Navy. He was very handy at fixing things, and always willing to help a friend or stranger. He loved people and had a hearty laugh. He would have given you the shirt off his back. He did everything at warp speed.
Though he loved living here in the mountains, he went to live in Florida when his brother Rob lost his wife in 2013. They lived together in Punta Gorda until Mark met Wanda Mefford in August of 2016. They became a couple. He loved his family, and Wanda's family of 4 grown children and 17 grandchildren, and they loved him.
Mark was preceded in death by grandparents, Nelse K. and Alma Nelson, his mother in 1979, his father in 2006, his brother Rob in 2022 and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his brothers Jon Nelson (Donna) in Colorado Springs, and Bill Nelson (Cathy) in Sedona, AZ, Wanda Mefford in Punta Gorda, FL and many nieces, nephews, and "adopted" grandchildren.
"A light has gone out in our lives with his passing, and he will be greatly missed."
A private gathering of family and friends will be held in Sept. to share stories and scatter his ashes in the mountains.

I'll always remember your little red karmann ghia and the patchouli oil that got spilled in the glove box, and your smile and laugh. I'll miss you and you always have a place in my heart.
Condolences to the family.
