It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Mark Charles Seelye, 72, of Cascade, CO, announces that he passed away on October 6, 2024. A man of remarkable endurance and wit, Mark left an indelible mark on both the Pikes Peak region and the hearts of all who knew him.
Born in Pueblo in 1951, Mark was raised by his loving parents, Chuck and Joanne, and moved to Manitou Springs in 1965. Mark attended Immanuel Lutheran through middle school and then Fountain Valley School, where he was captain of the track team and set records that stood for decades. He continued his education at the University of Denver, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated with a degree in business management in 1974.
Mark's professional career began in hospitality before establishing Seelye Financial Services in 1987. He had the fortune to partner with his father, Chuck Seelye, as independent insurance brokers, and they served individuals and small businesses along the Front Range for 37 years.
It was Mark's athletic pursuits that truly set him apart. He had a passion for trail running and holds the remarkable record of completing 36 consecutive Pikes Peak Ascent races, a feat that many believe will never be matched. He finished first in the Masters division and eleventh overall in 1995 and was second in the Masters division the following two years.
His dedication to the race up "America's Mountain" was legendary and extended into his service on the Board of Directors for Barr Camp and as a volunteer for the Pikes Peak Marathon. Mark also had a true love for the sport of hockey and, much to his Colorado Springs friends' dismay, was an avid DU hockey fan (Go Pioneers!). In recent years, Mark could often be found on the ice, playing in his "geezer hockey" league with his friends multiple days per week.
A man of intellect and joy, Mark approached life with a unique blend of determination and levity. He always had a quip ready to lighten the mood. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire his family and friends.
Mark was preceded in death by his father Chuck Seelye. Mark is survived by his mother, Joanne Seelye; sister, Janice Penman; children, Jocelyn Phipers (Nick) and Trevor Seelye (Liz); mother of his children, Kathleen Seelye; and seven grandchildren who affectionately called him "Opa". His grandchildren thought the world of him, and he never failed to encourage them with his trademark humor and wisdom.
A traditional service will be held at St. George's Anglican Church in Colorado Springs at 11:00 am on Monday October 28th with a celebration of life to follow at Phantom Canyon Brewery at 12:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Barr Camp, a place that Mark supported throughout his life and which played a significant role in shaping his legacy. https://barrcamp.com/donate/
