Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Mark W. Melcher US Army Specialist.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

Mark as the anniversary of your passing approaches I remember well of being afforded the opportunity to be amongst your bravery. I've never forgotten you and I'm proud to have made your acquaintance. I still have the Snow CD you gave me all those years ago at Mellon – yes I did listen to Lady with a Red Dress on as you asked me to... I don't know if you were trying to say something through a song but I'm sure you knew where my heart was going to take me. However, none the less I love ya and I'm thankful to have encountered such a witty, noble soul. Your memory lives in my heart. Thank you Soldier for your selfless sacrifice - Love ya, Lana McCartan aka ‘Thumper' as Mike would say!

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I met Spc Melcher when he arrived for duty in Iraq. He was "the new guy" and I never really got to truely know him. He was assigned to my platoon and I had the honor of speaking with him one day. I knew that he was one of a kind. Here was a soldier, that had seen war before, volunteered to come back and fight again. The first question he asked me was, where do I sign up to stay, since our unit was scheduled to come home in a few months. He wanted to put his time in, like everyone else. He was only with us a few weeks before he was killed and I never got a chance to sit with him again and talk.
He always wanted to learn more and more, never afraid to ask a question. He was a true soldier and it was a honor to know him and serve with him.
Mark, walk in Heaven now, you've done your time in hell.

It really touch me deeply the fact that SPC Melcher is no longer among us. I met Mark in Camp Shelby and we were toguether in War
rior Platoon 03. He and I shared lots of stories about Desert Shield/Storm. I used to be a Tank Platoon leader hence; long hours of converstaion about tanks beetween him and I. I still have a picture of the last night before he got into the bus and left Camp Shelby and also other pictures with some of our friends. He was a true American that sacrified the comfort of being out of a dangerous Combat zone and decided to go and serve this country without reservation or purpose of evasion. My upmost respect and sympathy for Mark and his entire family.
I wish our Nation has more Patriots Citicens like Mark.

I met Mark at Camp Shelby, MS - where we went thru mobilization. We shared many conversations about his tanks - that he loved - and my infantry. He was truly a great soldier, who had no regrets about his mission he was heading to in Iraq - the veteran he was.
My sympathies go out to his family and friends. The men and women that were in Camp Shelby with Mark, and those that proudly served with him, are mourning with you. This is our loss. On April 15 America lost a great son, and a good soldier - in Specialist Mark Melcher. May his soul rest in peace.

My heartfelt sympathies are being sent to you, over the death of your beloved son Mark. He lived in the same apt. bldg. and though I didn't know him well, my heart felt sadden by your loss. He and I got to talk last summer, while on the bus (when the bldg. had a chemical evacuation.) He spoke then about going into the reserves, for his future retirement monies, also about his job at Mellon Bank and about his cat. He reminded me a little of one of my own sons (that I lost do to a tragic accident). So I can truly sympathize with your heart break. You are in my prayers.

Please except our heartfelt sympathy, we are very sorry for your loss.
It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped in the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.
Honor them by remembering...Freedom- is their gift to us.

I want to extend my condolences to you for your devastating loss. I first met Mark when he started working at Mellon in 1993, and I became friends with him not much after that, as I am sure most people did when they got to know Mark. I regret not keeping in touch with him over the last couple of years, but Mark left a everlasting impression with me, and I want to along with Mark's family extend my condolences to Sean, Mike, and Eric as I know that you guys were extremely close to Mark. To the Family of Spc. Mark W. Melcher:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 who was also from Pittsburgh.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

The Melcher Family,
Our family would like to express our deepest sympathies. Mark will be greatly missed. I know that my son Eric will miss him. They were good friends. He's been to our house and some family functions and was always kind and gave us some good laughs. Having four sons I can't imagine the pain you're family is going through and hope that with time some of your pain eases a little. He was at our house the week before he was to leave and he told me that he really wanted to go defend his country. You must be proud of him for his dedication. There should be more men like him.
Once again, please accept our condolences.

To the Melcher family,
I want to express how deeply saddened I was when I heard the news regarding Mark. I was devastated. He was very special to me and always will be. I can't understand what you are going through right now, only that you are more devastated than I. I am very sorry for your loss. Mark was a great person. Not selfish at all.
I remember Mark from when you lived on High Street. I live right up the street. He became my best friend and wrote to me all the time while he was in Germany and part of Desert Storm. We grew apart as friends, that is what is hurting me right now. I didn't get the chance to tell him how special he was to me. I have always wondered what how he was doing, where he was working. Until I read the article in the paper, I didn't realize that we worked for the same company, just different areas. Small world...
Again, I will always be thinking about him as I always did before. We have lost a great person, a hero to me. I wish there was more I could do for your family, but I will pray for you and pray for him.
I miss you Mark.
Love you,
Jen

To Mr. and Mrs. Melcher, John and Denise and Luke,
I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. Every day that I hear of someone passing away, it reminds me all that much more how precious life is, and how short it can be. We are given no guarentees. I pray that the memories you have of Mark will keep his presence and warmth with you all the time, even though he is gone. There is no other sacrifice so heroic as to die for your country and I appreciate that he was willing to be there for us. I pray God would comfort you in the days and years ahead. I can't imagine losing a child, please know you are in my prayers and my heart breaks for you. May God bless you and give you the strength you need to face the days ahead.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Melcher
I never met your son, but I feel like I knew him. My sister worked with your son for the last nine years at Mellon Bank. She spoke of Mark often, and felt he was a great member of their work team. Mark's fellow employees are devasted by his death. Mark's sacafice helped them to understand what true comittment and patriotism is. No words seem right to tell you how sorry I am that he is gone. His gift to us, freedom, will not be forgotten.
