Martha J. Gaines passed away peacefully on July 7, 2013 at the age of 74. Marty was a longtime Colorado Springs resident and very active member of several organizations, both social and philanthropic. Marty was an educator and administrator and more importantly, a devoted military wife and mother. She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Air Force Falcons football team and could always be found cheering on one of her grandchildren at a sporting or a musical event. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Gary and their children Tom (Christa) Gaines of Broomfield, Colorado; Steve (Genna) Gaines of Colorado Springs; David (Darcy) Gaines of Versailles, Kentucky; and Gretchen (Jim) Benson of Colorado Springs along with seven beloved grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Assistance League of Colorado, School Bell Program, 21 E. Costilla, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A memorial will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 17 at Central United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs.

I offer heartfelt sympathy to Gary and all of Marty's family. I had the honor of serving on the PPN board with Marty and shared AAUW activities with her. Although she left us all too soon, fond memories of her boundless energy and infectious laugh will remain with us.

I am so sad to hear of Martha's passing. I remember her so well from our Akron school days and was so happy to reconnect with her by mail in recent years...always hoped that we'd be able to visit in person. She was always a great person. I hope to be at her memorial service.

The Shibley/Hubbs clan is so sorry for your loss. I know I speak for all of us - Iceland was even more fun and enjoyable with friends like the Gaines. Marty was a vibrant, beautiful soul- inside and out. Our Thoughts and Prayers go out to all of you.

Air Force football won't be the same without Marty's cheering voice coming from the stands. We certainly will miss seeing her there in the stands as well at musical events at the Pikes Peak Center...she was a great fan of football and music and a wonderful friend.
