Wendell Merrill, LTC (Ret. Army) Obituary

Wendell W. Merrill, LTC (Ret. Army) passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the age of 99. He was a native of Bisbee, Arizona and a Hampton resident for 56 years.

Wendell was called "Wendy" by his friends. He attended the University of Arizona and the University of Washington when he was called up from Army ROTC in 1942. After being stationed at several locations, he trained as a paratrooper and was transferred to Army Intelligence. Duty tours with Intelligence included Japan (he spoke Japanese) and Berlin, Germany. He retired as head of Counter-Intelligence at Ft. Monroe as a Lt. Col. with 20+ years and then pursued a second career in Civil Service.

Wendy was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Vessa Merrill and daughter, Judith Koestring. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary Merrill; sons, Charles Merrill and James Merrill; grandchildren, Kimberly Collins, Jesse Merrill, and Willow Todd; and eight great-grandchildren.
