Mary Fortune Obituary

Elizabeth Cummings Fortune died on October 31, 2012, at Hospice Atlanta. She was an active resident of Canterbury Court in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband Porter Lee Fortune Jr., her daughter Janet Cummings Fortune, her parents Clyde and Doris Cummings, and her brother J. C. Cummings. She is survived by son Philip Lee Fortune and wife Janet Ellis Fortune of Atlanta; daughter Jean Fortune Kaplan and husband Arthur Kaplan of Graham, NC; son Carey Fortune and wife Regina Fortune of Old Fort, NC; grandchildren Molly Fortune and husband Chris Kemper, Philip Lee Fortune Jr. and wife Tracey Fortune, Aaron Fortune Kaplan and wife Abby Shoun Kaplan, Jacob Fortune Kidd, Anna Fortune Kaplan, Chris Fortune and wife Christy Fortune, and Logan Fortune; and 6 great grandchildren. Lib was born in Ware Shoals, SC, and grew up in High Point, NC. She graduated from the Womans College of the University of North Carolina. Lib was first lady of the University of Mississippi during her husbands 16-year tenure as chancellor and endowed the Fortune Gallery of the University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses. She was a member of Oxford-University United Methodist Church. In Atlanta she attended Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses in care of the University of Mississippi Foundation, PO Box 249, University, MS 28677.
