Mary Sue Thomas Hill passed into heaven on Friday, August 5, 2022, after a brief illness. Mary Sue was born July 4, 1923, in Tampico, Illinois, to Harley Owen Thomas and Elizabeth Esther Sippel Thomas. Mary Sue was 99 years and one month of age.
Following graduation from Stillwater High School, Mary Sue graduated from Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (Oklahoma State University) where she was inducted as a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority (Oklahoma Beta chapter) in 1941. Mary Sue was a lifelong member of the Pi Beta Phi Alumni Organization and participated in its activities until her passing. Mary Sue lived in Nichols Hills where she and her husband John Oliver Vaughn raised their daughters, Courtney Ann Vaughn and Johnna Reed Vaughn. Mary Sue later married USAF General James Erskine Hill, Jr. and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. After General Hill's passing on May 20, 1999, Mary Sue moved to Tucson, Arizona, until she decided to move back home to Oklahoma.
Mary Sue was an active member of the Nichols Hills United Methodist Church and attended regularly where she preferred to sit on the third row every Sunday. Mary Sue was an active member of P.E.O., Chapter EH, and always had many fond memories to share from her participation in P.E.O. Mary Sue was small in stature but large in life. For everyone who knew Mary Sue, they always knew, Mary Sue's opinions and sometimes she was characterized as quite the life of the party.
Mary Sue is preceded in death by her parents and her daughters, Courtney Ann Vaughn (Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson) and Johnna Reed Vaughn Bradley, and her brothers, Charles William "Bill" Thomas and Walter Keith Thomas, and her sisters, Barbara Ann Thomas Simank and Carolyn Thomas.
Mary Sue is survived by her granddaughter, Misha Vaughn Welchel and her husband, Gregory Don Welchel, and her great-granddaughter, Lucy Ann Vaughn, and her grandson, Clayton Vaughn-Roberson, and her brother, Owen Reed Thomas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Mary Sue will be held Thursday, August 18, 2022 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Funeral Home, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, OK 73116. A funeral service will occur Friday, August 19, 2022 at 11:00 am at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church, 1212 Bedford Drive, Nichols Hills, OK 73116. Mary Sue will be laid to rest in the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nichols Hills United Methodist Church, 1212 Bedford Drive, Nichols Hills, OK 73116, or a charity of your choice.
