Mary Edna Warner Hughes passed away peacefully at age 98 in Colorado Springs on 27 August 2023. She was a Colorado Springs resident since 1955. She joins her beloved husband of 62 years Gerald "Jerry" Hughes (d. 2009), in Heaven. They raised and are survived by four children and have seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Their children are Charles (Kathryn) of Kiowa, Steven (Sharon) of Santa Barbara, Kevin (Diane) of St. Louis, and Karen Hughes Schott (David) of Colorado Springs. Grandchildren are Elizabeth Hughes Gallegos (Jim) of Ft. Collins, Katherine Hughes Butler (Cameron) of Ft. Collins, Andrew Hughes (Tracy) of Pasadena, Emily Hughes Sanders (Matt) of Los Angeles, Toby Hughes (Alleen) of Moreno Valley, Travis Hughes of St. Louis, and Victoria Hughes Nelson (Brad) of St. Louis. Great grandchildren are Colby Mulvihill (Courtney) of Ft. Collins, Hayden, Austin, and Blake Hughes of Pasadena, Laine and Weston Sanders of Los Angeles, Aiden Garcia and Autumn Hughes of Marino Valley, and Atreus and Tyr Nelson of St. Louis.
Mary is survived by siblings Bill Warner (Joan) of Santa Fe, Betty Ottesen (FG) of Greeley, and Robert Warner of Ft. Lupton. Siblings John Leonard Warner and Anna Warner Sickler preceded her in death.
Mary was born on the Warner Family Farm/Ranch on 22 December 1924 to John Clifford and Dakota Ellen Warner and loved growing up there with her five siblings. The ranch is still in the family under the stewardship of Robert Warner and is now designated as a "Colorado Centennial Ranch." She attended Ft. Lupton H.S. and later the University of Colorado Boulder where she met her husband, Jerry (m. 14 June 1947). Their life together included residing at Denver, Rocky Ford, and Colorado Springs as well as traveling all over the USA and the world. She was dedicated to raising her family, her profession as an elementary school teacher (retired in 1988), her memberships at the First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, PEO, and Alpha Phi Sorority, Mary found much enjoyment in playing tennis and bridge, and spending time with her family and many beloved friends. She is remembered for love of God, family, friends, students, traveling, ability to embrace change and steady loving outgoing personality.
Services will be held on 13 October 2023, 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St. Colorado Springs and interment of Mary and Jerry's ashes at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery will follow at 2:00 PM.
