Mary Metheny Obituary

Heaven's door opened on June 14, 2010, as Mary was welcomed home, by the Lord she loved and had faithfully served her whole life. Mary Nell (Jones) Metheny was born in Amherst, Texas on April 29, 1931 to James L. and Lillie (McElroy) Jones. Mary wed Arthur Metheny Jr. on June 4, 1949. They moved to Colorado Springs in 1954 and opened Mayflower Moving Company. Mary also worked as a skilled meat wrapper for Safeway and was a longtime office clerk for J.C. Penny. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Mary was a member of Belleview Baptist Church, where she and Art were dedicated sponsors of the Jr. High Youth Group for many years and they were loyal sponsors of several AFA Cadets. For over 25 years, St. Paul's United Methodist Church has been her church family and her devoted service was given with love. The youth were recipients of her prayers and generosity with every project they did. Singing in the church choir was her passion, as she shared he beautiful soprano voice. Mary took great delight dressing-up in purple with a stylish red hat to attend luncheons with the Red Hat Saints. Her Survivors include daughter, Jan Petit, (Texas), Granddaughter, Rachel Huisenga, (SC) and Great-Grandsons Paul and Julian, a sister-in-law Arlain Miller, niece, Elaine Wood, nephew, David Inman, several great nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Art, and her sister Lois Inman. A memorial service will be held June 17, 2010 at 1:30 PM in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2111 Carlton Ave. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul's UNC Choir or Youth Funds or The American Kidney Foundation.
