Mary Nevins Obituary

Mary Lou Nevins died on November 23rd at McKenzie Place in Colorado Springs. She had been in home hospice care since August with congestive heart failure. Mary Lou was born in Lindon Colorado on June 2, 1917, to Earl Arbuthnot and Blanche Sheesley Arbuthnot She spent her childhood on a farm in Haddam Kansas. After graduation from college, she went to work with her aunt in Fort Morgan, Colorado. While there, she met and married Hugh Nevins, who was training as a glider pilot in preparation for service in World War II. Hugh, Mary Lou and their family were stationed in Washington D.C, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Germany, finally retiring in Colorado in 1962. Mary Lou became Hugh's partner in developing Red Rock Ranch in Monument. They had many interests together including building homes, raising horses and establishing the Colorado Ski School for the Blind. After Hugh's death in 1997, Mary Lou moved from their ranch home, spending time in Colorado Springs and Scottsdale, Arizona. She leaves behind three children, Ryan Nevins and his wife Cheri, Sue Majors and her husband Jack, and Gary Nevins and his wife, Penny. Her grandchildren, Jennifer Foster, Sara Fenzl, Derek Nevins and Amanda Rigoni were the joy of her life as were her three great grandchildren: Hugh Foster, Isaac Fenzl and Henry Fenzl. Her gentle nature, positive outlook, friendly and open attitude made her beloved by family and friends whose lives she touched. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. Mary Lou asked that no memorial service be held. Donations in her honor may be sent to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care of Colorado Springs.
