Mary was born on January 16, 1924 in Aberdeen, SD to Martha and Frederick Braithwaite. She lived her first three years in Cedar City, Utah before moving to Honolulu, Hawaii. Her mother's family was one of the founding families of Cedar City Utah arriving in 1857 from York, England. Their story is an exciting tale of the settlement of the West. Her husband's family came to Jamestown, VA in 1620.
Aside from being a fantastic cook, a loving, caring mother of four who always made home a wonderful place to be, she was a very talented professional artist. She studied with world renowned artist Lajos Marcos for many years. Her father and uncle were both artists who got their training at the Royal Academy of Art in London. After her father resided in Utah where he taught art at Webber State University, he moved his young family to Hawaii.
Mary grew up in Hawaii and learned much of her artistic skills from her father. She graduated from the Punahou School in Hawaii where she did illustrations for the annual yearbooks. Her early talent grew as she continued to paint and develop her skills. Mary could paint anything but specialized mostly in Portraits. She painted many important people, such as Superior Court Judge Leon Gerofsky, Middlesex County Court Judge John B. Molineux, daughter of former President of NBC Mrs. Armin Smith, Governor of Texas William P. Clements and many, many more.
Mary B. Price was a master at her profession. Mary was represented by a number of galleries and was well respected in her career. Mary was one of the few people remaining who was present during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. She saw the Japanese planes flying over head the day of the attack and was told by a neighbor it was not a drill. Many of the students from Punahu School went down to the ships to see if they could help. After the Pearl Harbor attack her quiet, beautiful island of Oahu was transformed by the incoming military personnel.
She met and married one of the officers that was on active duty in Hawaii, James Price. They stayed on in Hawaii after the war and built a house where they had their first daughter. Later they moved to New Jersey and had three more children, and Mary continued to refine her painting skills.
The family wishes to thank all the caring people at Palisades at Broadmoor Park who devoted themselves to Mary for the past five years.
Services will be private at the Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver.
