Mary Schladweiler Obituary

Mary D. Schladweiler passed into eternal rest on March 8, 2011. Mary was born on September 8, 1921 to Thomas J. McAvoy and Lydia Angeline Amlong in Washington, Iowa. Not long after Mary was born she lost her mother, to consumption. Thomas McAvoy found it hard to raise four children, and after his death in 1943, she along with one of her sisters were adopted by Harry Davidson and family, and her other siblings were taken to an orphanage. She spent most of her life in and around the Davenport area of Iowa. She and her husband (Elmer) were longtime residents of Colorado Springs, Colorado and surrounding areas. Mary was part of the original personnel that started the Montgomery Ward store here in Colorado Springs. Later in her professional career she worked at the Academy Bank at the U.S. Air Force Academy, until retirement. She was also a seamstress at home and did alterations for many people in the Colorado Springs area. She enjoyed many different hobbies such as crocheting, needlework, and quilting. Mary married the love of her life (Elmer) on June 7, 1941. Since Elmer was in the military, Mary was able to travel to most duty stations before Elmer was sent to Korea. Mary raised three children while Elmer was away. She finally got to travel with Elmer overseas to France, Germany, Belgium and Holland on his tour of duty in Europe. Mary is survived by her three children, daughters Anita (Earl) Reimer, Gail (Ken) Tarvin, and son Peter (Lani) Schladweiler, as well as 6 grand children and 15 great-grand children. She is preceded in death by her husband Elmer Schladweiler, both parents Thomas and Lydia, brother Bob, sisters Fleta and Beulah, as well as grandson Jimmy (Robbins), granddaughters Heather and Andrea (Schladweiler) and granddaughter Natalie (Barks De Palma). The surviving grand children are Cindy, Michelle, David, Melissa, Shannon and Shelly. In her retirement years she was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren and great grand children. Mom, you taught our whole family life lessons that we will never forget. We wish we could have had more time with you after Dad's death, but that was not to be. Your steadfast love for Dad is something that we will never forget. We love you and will miss you forever.
