Matthew Myers Obituary

Matthew John Myers September 27, 1963 - September 25, 2007. Matthew John Myers, a cherished soul, died Tuesday while Scuba Diving in Resurrection Bay, Alaska. Matt would have been 44 years old on September 27, 2007. He was born into the bustling 11 child household of Jim and Tedde Myers in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Matt was never lost in the crowd, instead his determination and unfading passion for life was always with him and pushed him to always try to stand out and become the self-starter he was. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1980, obtained B.S. in Biology from C.U. Boulder in 1985 and continued on to receive a B.S. in Aquatic Fisheries from Colorado State University. Matt nurtured his love of the outdoors and biology by working in Colorado in various positions broadening his experiences and building his resume. His work as a commissioned Park Ranger took him to many Colorado State Parks including Eleven Mile, Chatfield and Eldorado Canyon. His work at the Rocky Mountain arsenal introduced him to the world of toxicology and contaminant research. Matt's lifelong dream of the ocean and becoming a marine biologist drew Matt and his family to move to Anchorage, Alaska in June of 2000 to pursue their greatest adventure. Ultimately, all his professional dreams came true as well, as Matt worked toward completing a Ph.D. program in marine biology through the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward Alaska. He continued his research and worked tirelessly to help to find an answer to the declining stellar sea lion population and has had several published scientific articles. Alaska has provided endless new opportunities for Matt and his family to explore the great outdoors, learn new sports and satisfy Matt's never ending love of nature. He was an avid hiker and skier, loved every sport related to water including sailing, fishing, kayaking, and scuba diving. He had a great respect for nature and worked nonstop to convince the world and those around him to protect it by recycling and honoring the beauty the world has to offer. Matt's family and friends will always remember him as having yet another new hobby, learning to play yet another musical instrument, and being an eternal optimist. The greatest joy of Matt's life beyond the ocean was to be the father to his two sons Jacob and Cody. He was an exceptional, fantastic father and simply glowed while being with them. Matt was the first to get down on the floor to play, had insatiable love of toys and is known to be the third biggest kid in the family. Matt was very protective of his cubs and Michelle, his wife. Our family asks that all who knew him help to embrace and guide his boys, making sure they laugh a lot and play, play, play. A celebration of a great life is planned for Matt on Tuesday, October 2nd at Evergreen Memorial Chapel at 4:00 pm in Anchorage and 3 p.m. Friday, October 5th in Colorado Springs, Colorado at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to benefit his sons at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union (1-800-525-9094) under the account name "Matthew Myers Memorial Fund". Memories and photos for Jacob and Cody's memory book are being collected and can be sent to [email protected]. Please share your own memories of Matt at http://mattmyersmemorial.legacy.com.

I knew Matt as a silly guy that loved to dress up and be a kid, I still can recall so clearly the year they first moved in to the house and threw a halloween party. He had this nutty professor costume that made me laugh. I only wish I would have spent more time with him. Michelle I love you and I'm sending you all my thoughts, strength, and prayers. Jake and Cody are so blessed to have you as there Mom.

Dear Myers family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Matt was a very special person. I don't think he ever spoke a negative word about anyone. He accepted everyone for who they were. And his smile could light up a room! I'll never forget doing "Mollie Brown" with Matt, Tim Rascob and John Andrson @one of our many variety shows that Mr. Mc Clain helped us put on. He will be greatly missed. Please know that he and your family are in my(and all the Plush family) thoughts and prayers.May God Bless his soul and comfort you at this difficult time.

To all of the Myers'family our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I have to tell you it was only a few months ago I ran into Jill Cerise while coaching volleyball. Of course, while talking about St. Mary's, the conversation couldn't end without talking about the Myer's family. I will make sure I forward the obituary to her if she hasn't seen it. Again, we send our prayers and will be thinking of your family this week at mass.

I often think of my St. Mary's family and the roads that we traveled that were paved by the education we received and the friendships that we made. The Myers family was a big family. I don't know how my class, Class of 1979, missed out on having one as they were either one or more ahead of us or one or more behind us. I did not know Matt well enough but I did know who he was and what he was as a person. My sister, Debbie, shared some of his classes. He was one to always say hello. He had a great personality. He will be sorely missed by all that were blessed to have known him. May God have mercy on his soul and may God bless the Myers family in there time of need. We'll see you again Matt.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and the sadness it must bring to all who knew Matt and the joy of life he had within him.

To celebrate life is to live life; Matt did that so well!

I vividly recall the incessant smile and positive attitude - always in all ways.

Our prayers are for Matt's family who undoubtedly will feel a deep loss - however our hope is with Jesus who promises us eternal life and we know that one day we will see Matt again! Praise God!

May Matt's passion and his life long work for responsible stewardship of our planet continue on as a tribute in each of our lives.

With deepest sympathy and a hope for heaven.

To the Myers Family,

I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Matt. Sandy and I were just talking to Teddie on Sunday at the DR fall festival about him and all his accomplishments. I still can't believe it. Matt was always so funny, and friendly.

I played football with him, as he was one year behind me. I'll always remember his humor and smile. My family as well as all the
Murphy's send our deepest prayers and thoughts to all the Myers family.

May God Bless you and see you thru
this most difficult time. Love to you all!

To Katie and the rest of the Myers clan,

I was so sorry to hear about your brother, son, loved one, Matt. He was a great kid in high school and, based on the obituary, hadn't changed much -- except, perhaps, that the good qualities I remember when he was a teenager flowered as he matured and raised a family.

Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Lorie Raymer
