Maurice Barnes Obituary

Maurice F. Barnes, 84, died quietly Sunday afternoon, at home. His wife of 65 years, Velma, and their daughter, Maurigeanne Byrd, were with him at his passing. Maurice was part of the fabric of Colorado Springs, his hometown. He was a Bell Captain and later a superintenent of services, at the Broadmoor Hotel from the age of 16 until he started his career as a real estate developer in 1961. He was partner in both One One Five Land Company and Highland Lakes Company. He served in WWII with the Quarter Master Depot Company in Burma. Throughout his life, Maurice enjoyed cooking, traveling, football (go Broncos and Air Force!), boating, golf, gardening, and most of all entertaining family and friends. He and Velma have been members of the Colorado Springs Country Club for decades, and long-time members of the First United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife and daughter, Maurice is survived by his grandchildren: Scott Barnes, Clinton Byrd, Jodi Bryant, and Jennifer Calverley, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Douglas; his brothers: Henry and William; and parents, Henry and Irene. Visitation is 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Shrine of Remembrance. Services are 10:00 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church (420 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, 80903). In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Maurice's memory to Pike's Peak Hospice (825 East Pikes Peak Ave. Suite 600, Colorado Springs, 80903). We remember Maurice for his clever wit, sparkling eyes, an appreciation for life's gifts, and how he loved Velma every day just as he had the first day he saw her. He inspired us with his verve and joy of living every day to its fullest. We'll miss him. We're glad, and honored, to have shared his life.

Velma,

Though I only met you one time, I feel like I know you well.

I own QS Nurses and visited often with Maurice and Melvin Olsen. Maurice talked about his wonderful wife Velma and how you both were active with waterskiing. He spoke of his gardening in years past, but you were the center of conversation and he would talk about you and his affections were so evident.

I was over to your home a few times where we would admire his garlic garden in the planter so he wouldn't have to bend over so much anymore. He gave me much garlic and suggestions for cooking with it. He also gave me many gardening tools painted orange. I use them to this day. He also gave me a golfing putter made of bamboo. What a special rememberance and it hangs in my home office.

He told me about your cabin in the mountains, and we talked often about his and Melvin's activities in one one five land company. I missed you both several times as I stopped by the house.

He was a wonderful man whom I enjoyed visiting very much. He often talked about your daughter and son Douglas when he was alive.

I will never forget his eyes. When he looked at you he was focused completely on you, and how those eyes sparkled and gleaned.

I also shall never forget Maurice.

God bless you and your family with the wonderful memories you have and may God give you his strength and peace.

Kind Regards,

Terry L Whitlow

Velma & Maurigeanne,

Am so sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. Memories of fun days gone by, come to my mind. Those wonderful days of waterskiing at Prospect Lake, putting on water ski shows back in the 50's-60's, and all of the family picnics. Good days with good friends. You are in our prayers and thoughts.

We knew Maurice and Velma through our friends, Gary and Mary Eiber. Maurice always brought smiles and laughs wherever he's around. We saw him last in the summer of 2004 in Colorado Springs during the Celebration of Life for Gary Eiber. May God give the family strength and peace during this difficult time.

Love,

Sam and Esther Hadisutjipto
