Maurice Ross Obituary

SMSGT. (USAF RET.) Maurice W. Ross, Sr., of Colorado Springs, CO., went to live with God and the angels on Thursday, May 4, 2006 after a courageous battle with a long time illness. Maurice was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Survivors include his devoted wife of 48 years, Zelma; son Maurice, Jr (Angela); daughters: Sandra and Crystal; and grandson, Alex. Maurice is also survived by his mother, Edna S. Ross and brothers, Donald and Gerald. He was preceded in death by his father, Whitfield Ross. He is further survived by many friends and relatives to include sisters-in law: Yvonne (Willie) Smith and Shirley (Clifton) Morris; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and his faithful cat, Sheba. Maurice was born in Huntington, WV on March 27, 1938. After graduating from high school in 1955, he joined the Air Force and proudly served our nation as a supply sergeant for 24 years. Maurice served in Texas, Korea, Japan, Germany, Michigan, Minnesota and Colorado. Maurice retired from the Air Force in 1979. He then earned a B.A. degree and teaching certificate from Regis University. Maurice was a popular substitute teacher in Fountain Fort Carson School District Eight, Harrison School District 2 and Colorado Springs School District 11 for several years. Maurice retired from teaching in 1999. Maurice was a founding member of the Colorado Springs Black Catholic Council and an active member of the Knights of Columbus #4638 and the Holy Family Catholic Parish. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his grandson, Alex. Maurice enjoyed listening to Blues music, reading, telling stories and playing on his computer. His wit, sense of humor, playfulness, banter, advice and opinions will be sorely missed by his family, friends, kidney dialysis colleagues and medical staff members of Summit Dialysis Center, Pikes Peak Care Center and Memorial Hospital. A Rosary will be held, Friday, May 12, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, 6630 S. U.S. Highway 85-87 in Fountain, CO. Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 331 Main Street in Security, CO, followed by a Knights of Columbus reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Kidney Fund, American Heart Association or the Building Fund for St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Maurice's name.

Hi, this message is for Sandy and Crystal. My name is Julie Lyons from Mitchell High School. I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I remember him from twenty-some years ago. I lost my mom a few years ago, and I know it's not easy. You are all in my thoughts and I hope you are doing well and coping as well as can be expected. Julie
