Max Davis Obituary

October 4, 1921-January 29, 2008. 53-year Colorado Springs resident, Max Davis, 86, died January 29, 2008 of malignant melanoma. A funeral service will be held at Temple Beit Torah, 522 E Madison St, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80907, on Monday, February the 4th at 2 pm. A visitation will be held from 12-3 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Entombment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance Chapel Mausoleum. A reception following temple services will be held at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 South Union Boulevard. Max was born October 4, 1921, in Arkansas City, Kansas, a year after his parents and siblings moved there from Torun, in Eastern Europe. He grew up in Wichita, graduating from East High School and attending Wichita University for one year, saying he majored in "fun". Max then enlisted in the Air Force and fought in World War II as a bombardier navigator in the 410th Bomb Group, flying 54 combat missions over Europe. Returning to Kansas, he met and married the love of his life, his wife, Sally Resnick. They had many business enterprises before Max came to Colorado Springs to manage the Zales Jewelry store. He worked for Zales for 45 years, managing the downtown store, the Citadel store, and becoming a district manager as well. His great success in the jewelry business was due to his engaging sense of humor and his care for other people. He was also a good manager, willing to stand up for his employees when they needed assistance. After he retired, he continued to sell jewelry as Max Davis Diamond Broker. He always enjoyed buying, selling and making deals with people. Max was well known by many merchants and customers in the Springs, and many of them remained good friends throughout his life. He was on the board of St. Francis Hospital of 15 years and served as Board President. Max received numerous awards for his community participation in humanitarian and philanthropic efforts. He belonged to many organizations, including the Argonauts, Colovest, Soil Savers and Masons, and also was an active member of the local Jewish community. Max was a wonderful husband and father and was beloved by his family, including extended family that spreads all over the country. "Uncle Max" was everyone's favorite uncle because he was full of fun and always had a good joke for anyone he met. Max loved to travel and he and Sally were able to travel all over the world. He loved food and kept a "little black book" with the names of the best restaurants in every city he visited. He also looked for relatives with the original family name, Davidovits, wherever he went. Max lost Sally to breast cancer in 1993, and was very lucky to have had the love and companionship of Ann Thomas for the past 11 years. Max is survived by his brother, Leon, special lady Ann Thomas, children Leslye Meyer (Steve), Gregg Davis, and Lisa Davis, grandchildren Josh Jackson, Ben Jackson and Carrie Davis, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Max will be greatly missed by his family and all the people in Colorado Springs he touched with his sense of humor, integrity, and adventurousness. He will be entombed next to Sally at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either: Temple Beit Torah, 522 East Madison Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80907, or Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 825 East Pikes Peak Avenue #600, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903

I grew up knowing Max; he and my parents, Milton and Sylvia Slosky were good friends. My engagement ring was purchased from Max in 1966. What a dear man.

Max was one of the few people we know on earth who could bring humor to my Dental Office. This is not an easy task you understand. We ALWAYS looked forward to his visit. Patty and I will miss him tremendously and are so sorry we did not get to see him before he passed.

Dear Family of Max Davis,
We are so saddened by the death of Max....truly a great lost to this community.
We have known him since he became, manager at Zales, downtown, Colorado Springs.
I shall never forget that he opened and co-signed our son's first charge account (Zales) in 1967 because he felt him deserving as a minor.
You have our sincere blessing, prayers, and deepest sympathy; may he rest in peace.

Dear Davis family,

I am sending you my sincere and profound condolences. Not long ago -- on Rosh Hashana, I met Max at the Mountain Minyan. Today I was shocked to learn about his passing. Max was a wonderful, wonderful man, full of life, humor, and good advice. Anyone who knew him just loved him.

He will always be remembered with great fondness!

Dear Family,
I am so sorry for your loss, our loss. Uncle Max and Aunt Sally meant more to me than most of my extended family. It was great growing up next to them and then sharing time with them as an adult. I am so glad that I got to spend time with Uncle Max this summer. Wish I could be there as he was always there for us.
Love you guys.

All the Gergers send their deepest sympathies at this time of loss. The obituary really captures Max's enthusiasm for life and his love for everyone he met. He was "one of a kind" and we will miss him.
May his memory be a blessing and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him.

No greater man shall walk among us in laughter or praise. Having served on St. Francis Hospital Board with Max and all the other activities in the community it was always a great pleasure to share life with him. God speed and may your light continue to shine so others can see your good works.
