Maxine Holiman "Holly" Funk

Maxine Funk Obituary

IN MEMORY OF MAXINE HOLIMAN FUNK MARCH 3, 1923 - MAY 30, 2005. A lifelong native of Colorado Springs, "Holly" attended Colorado Springs High School and then graduated from Vassar College-Class of 1945. After college she married her high school sweetheart, Frederick R. Funk. After Fred's service in the Air Force, they returned to settle down in Colorado Springs with their two sons, Rick and Rob. Holly was instrumental in helping Fred and his brother Jim to open the family's business, Mahan's at the Broadmoor, which was in addition to the original downtown jewelry store location. In 1964, the family "temporarily" moved to Honolulu and fell in love with the islands. Consequently, Holly and the family maintained two residences for many years while enjoying extensive worldwide travel and visiting close college friends. She was an active supporter of the Fine Arts Center, Pioneer Museum and the Republican Party. Holly was also an avid reader and student of Hawaiian history, loved crossword puzzles and needlepoint, and never turned down a good bridge game. She was a longstanding member of Unity Church of the Rockies and in Honolulu. Last December in a Hawaiian lei ceremony at sea, Tutu's ashes were spread in the waters off Waikiki and Diamond Head. She is survived by her two sons: Robert H. Funk and wife Cynthia (Boerne, Texas) and Frederick R. Funk, Jr. and wife Brenda (Honolulu, Hawaii) and grandchildren Theresa (Hawaii), Brian and Kirsten (California) and great-grandchildren.

My "Tutu" was such an extraordinary woman. She has played an intricate part in molding me into the woman I am today. I love her very much and still think of her everyday. She left behind such a wonderful legacy and wealth of family history, and in that she remains within our hearts always. Will Colorado ever be the same without her?
