May McPherson Obituary
April 8, 1909 - July 31, 2007. May Opal McPherson was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on April 8, 1909 to Cora (Phillips) and Guy McPherson. May was a real pioneer, coming to Rush, Colorado the second year of her life. Her parents acquired a homestead and fixed a dugout to live in until they were able to build a home. May drove mules to help with the farming. She also taxied neighbor children to school with her horse and wagon. Later she raised turkeys. She taught school at Grandview and Kendrick and other small schools in the Rush area. She was janitor, teacher of all 8 grades and cooked a hot lunch for the students. She taught in the winter and attended York College in Nebraska in the summers to get her degree. Her dad drew the keys of the piano on a box and she learned the notes and later was able to play the piano for church and social functions. She came to Colorado Springs for junior and senior high school. She shared an apartment with her two younger brothers with no supervision, going home to Rush on weekends to help with the farm work. After teaching school for 16 years she moved to Colorado Springs where she worked as a linotype operator for the Gazette Telegraph almost 30 years. Being an avid reader since her youth May amassed a large library. May never married, but enjoyed other people's children, teaching the 3 and 4 year olds at Sunday School until she was 85 years old. She truly loved Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and lived a righteous life to honor Him. The last two years of her life she spent in the home of her nephew Wayne (Mac) McPherson and wife Sally Sue of Peyton, Colorado where many hours were spent listening to the stories of her yesteryears. She and the stories will be genuinely missed. She was preceded in death by Cora and Guy McPherson, brother Willard (Buck) McPherson, sister Pearl Sipes, and nephew Carl Sipes. She leaves to mourn her passing a brother Glenn McPherson, two nieces and four nephews. The memorial service will be held at the Central United Methodist Church, 4373 Galley Road at 10:30 am Saturday August 11, 2007. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Central United Methodist Church.
