Meera Bakthavachalam Obituary

Meera Bakthavachalam

March 7, 1946

March 2, 2020

Meera Bakthavachalam was born on March 7, 1946, in Coimbatore, India. She was the daughter of Mr. Mallikarjuna and Saraswati Chettiar. Meera was the widow of the late Dr. Nanjappa Bakthavachalam and mother of the late Ms. Uma Bakthavachalam.

Meera was raised in a busy household with three sisters and two brothers. Her father owned a prominent handloom sari shop in Coimbatore, India. Growing up, she studied classical Indian dance and became an accomplished Bharathanatyam dancer.

After marriage, Meera immigrated to the United States in 1969. She arrived to the American Northwest knowing little English but she learned quickly and she made many friends right away. She and her family lived on the east coast for many years before eventually settling in Colorado Springs, which she has called home since 1989.

Meera was boisterous, affable, loyal, and generous in life. She never hesitated to give to others. Whether it was caring for her family, volunteering outside the home, or frequenting the local malls, she never had an idle moment. Meera cherished her independence to the end.

She had a longstanding weakness for Pizza Hut's pan pizza, the Dunkin' Donuts glazed donut, and a well done frozen strawberry margarita. Meera could also always be seen walking her beloved Lhasa apsos, "Sam" and "Sam 2.0"

In her later years, she faced adversity with the tragic passing of her daughter. Her loss profoundly affected her disposition but she remained ever loving to her close family and friends.

She is survived by her three sisters and two brothers in India, son, daughter-in- law, and two granddaughters. She will always be held close to our hearts. May her soul Rest In Peace.

We love you always.

A funeral service will be held in her honor on March 11, 2022 at 9 am at the Memorial Gardens Funeral, Cremation, and Cemetery at 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80910.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Meera's name can be made to "More than a Meal" (www.morethanameal.org), a local volunteer-run charity providing food and clothing to the homeless of Colorado Springs.
