Merlin Gingerich Obituary

Long accustomed to waking before the sun to make sure our homes, hospitals, churches, and businesses were clear of snow, Merlin Deon Gingerich finally slept in and entered into eternal rest early Monday morning, January 5, 2015, at home.

A longtime resident of Colorado Springs and proprietor of Green Thumb Commercial Ground Maintenance for the last 38 years, Merlin's imprint on his community is undeniable. Through his work he made the city more beautiful everyday, but beyond that Merlin brightened the lives of countless Springs citizens with his willingness to give everyone his time and attention. In a high speed world Merlin always had a warm smile, kind words and a moment (or five) for those around him. It didn't matter if you were a long time friend or just happened to be next to him in line at Starbucks, to Merlin everyone was a friend or a potential one.

Born February 8, 1955 in Iowa City, Iowa to Ivo and Ada Gingerich, Merlin was a dedicated son, dependable brother, devoted husband, diligent father and doting grandfather throughout his bountiful life. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Phyllis, his sons Jason and Jeff, and daughter Amber Crispell. Merlins lives on in his grandchildren Malakai, Cash, Elliana, Asher, and Quinn, as well as his mother Ada, brother Loren, sisters Grace Ernst, Rose Hoover, and Linda Livengood and more in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends than stars in the sky. He joins his father Ivo and father in-law Melvin Kauffman, and twin sister Myrna Martin along with all the saints at the Heavenly Banquet in the city with streets of gold - which never need plowing.

The family invites anyone who has been touched by the life of Merlin to say your goodbyes to him at a viewing Thursday, January 8, from 5-8pm at Swan Law Funeral Home (501 N. Cascade Avenue) and to celebrate his life at a memorial service Sunday, January 11, beginning at 4pm at his home church, The Springs Church (1515 Auto Mall Loop) with a reception following. The family also wishes to thank the cloud of witnesses that have surrounded them during this difficult time and all who have had the privilege of sharing Merlin's life with them. Merlin lived his life focused on caring for those around him: family, friends, and otherwise. He fixed his eyes on Jesus, threw aside any access baggage and finished the race that was laid before him. Thanks be to God for the life of Merlin Gingerich!

Dear Phyllis, cousins, and Aunt Ada, I wish we could be with you all this weekend. It was so shocking to get the phone call about Merlin. Even though we didn't see alot of you all over the years, the moments we did were sweet, with your accompanying Ropp/Gingerich laughter, which still makes me smile. Makes me miss Myrna too. Just know you are all loved, and we will be praying for you through this time. We may be far apart but we haven't forgotten about you all. Looking forward to when we will ALL be together again. Love you all!

Merlin was a mentor to me in business, in being a man, being good to others and being great to family. In my toughest of times he offered a smile and time to conversate. My thoughts are with the entire Gingerich family as they work through this difficult time. He will be greatly missed by everyone he helped, influenced, loved or spoke to even once. God bless him for the impact he had on my life and God bless you all during this difficult time.

Although there are no words to describe how amazing Merlin Gingerich was, this obituary comes close. Though I am just a speck in the crowd of people that love him, he made a huge impact on my life. My husband, children and myself will forever be thankful that God allowed for our paths to cross. Our lives are richer from knowing him. Personally, I think his life ended too soon. Selfishly, I would wish him back. However, I trust in my Heavenly Father and His wisdom. Heaven became a much richer place when Merlin arrived. Phyllis, Jason, Jeff, Amber, your spouses and beautiful children: The Winchester's love you dearly and we are praying continuously for all of you. Until we meet again...

I know you are embracing the comfort that comes from the One who has provided us with the gift of Eternal Life. Thanks be to God, death does NOT have the final word! My love to you from across the miles.

There are really no words, to express the sorrow I feel for Merlins family, and all those that knew and loved him. I first met Merlin back in the mid-80s. I remember thinking that this is a Christian man. You could just tell. I worked with him off and on over the years, and especially the last few years since I have been with Park and Rec. Everytime I saw him he had a smile on his face. His reputation in the Landscape Industry was top notch, and he will be missed by so many. Jason,I am hoping that you will carry on the tradition, and run Green Thumb for another 38 years. My prayers and sympathy goes out to you and your family. But we know that Merlin is with our Father in heaven now. So we will rejoice in his life, and we will remember that our lives are in His hands. And hopefully live our lives, so that we too will make a difference in this world. May God comfort you and give you His peace. Merlin you will be missed.
