Birthday Buddy,
How bizarre it was that we shared the same birthdate as cousins, not to mention the same year even, two counties apart, and if I remember correctly hours apart. I remember summers at Fish Lake, you tormenting me with seaweed and always dominating everyone and taking the title "King of the Raft" you had an amazing soul and I am forever grateful ours were able to cross paths! I love and miss you and always keep you in my heart Mikey. Love, Emmy

Just came across this. I went to basic training with Mikey, as he was one of my best friends through it. We surely would have been best friends before joining the Army despite me being about 6 years younger. Unfortunately I was deployed at the same time as him and heard the news in Afghanistan via another friend deployed in Iraq , as I was not able to learn of much more nor attend his services. It was a true honor to know Mikey as not many days go by that I do not think of him.. we experienced some of the best and worst times of our lives together surely and for that I will always remember. And that one of a kind laugh...Still doing my research it is amazing to be able to see pictures and articles about him in addition to coming across this page. Thankfully I will be planning a road trip through Chicago summer 2021 and surely will be making a visit. I also cannot wait to read a book in his reading room after now learning of that. May his family still stay strong and know Mikey will always be remembered. The other soldiers in whom I am in contact with that also knew Mikey in basic always make sure to rise a beer up for him on memorial and Veterans Day. We miss ya bud. If this is still active and anyone is in contact with his family, please reach out to me at [email protected] as I would be grateful to get in touch to learn more. RIP Mikey

To the Olivieri Family -
I am a Department of Defense employee. In observance of Memorial Day, our agency distributed yellow-ribbon lanyards with small cards bearing the name, service and date of every military member lost in service in the 18 years since 9/11.
I had the privilege of wearing the lanyard that displayed Mike's name. While I never knew Mike, I wore the lanyard proudly, and with the rest of my teammates, honored Mike throughout the day.
I hope you know that Mike's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Dear Cousin Mike,
When cousin Lou called to let me know what had happened, I was shocked. I didn't even know we had family in Iraq. I did post a breif message earlier, but it has taken me awhile to get over the lost of your son. I wish I had a chance to meet him, from the entries I have read, Mike is quite a person. I don't know how you and the family feel at the lost of a son, husband, brother, grandson, or cousin. Words alone cannot replace Mike that continues to live on in your hearts and even though I would like to say things will be all right, they will forever be changed. Mike and all service men and women, that currently and past will always be heros to me. They have shown that they are willing to sacrifice everything to keep us safe and for the freedom we enjoy. I wish I could give you a hug and just listen to the stories about Mike as he was growing up. I love you cousin.

To Michael's family,
I just wanted to express my condolences to you and let you know that in the short few months that I knew Mike in Iraq, I really enjoyed simply being around him. He was always upbeat and I am not kidding when I say that he could have been anything he wanted to be, though he did tell me about his plans to become a U.S. Marshal someday.
He was a smart, nice kid and I was fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
I will save another story for when I actually call you sometime, but I want you to know that ever since that June 6th, nothing has been the same for me. That was a life changing day for a great many people, and I'm sure that most of us who understand it still feel an awful ache...a burning sensation that comes and goes as it pleases; the feeling of anger, loss, disbelief and sadness mixed with the positive memories of the Soldiers who sacrificed for us...
Your son was a great person and I only hope that you know with as much conviction as I do that he is in a special place in Heaven.

Jody, Michael, and family,
I wanted to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family. I remember Mikey in my Social Studies class at Homer Jr. High. I don't know if you remember me, (Nikki Smith) but I remember him so well. I can close my eyes and see his wonderful smile and sweet nature. As his Social Studies teacher, I couldn't be more proud of our HERO. In class I spent so much time talking about our military and how freedom is never free. He gave the greatest gift to our country and I will never forget him. He was a precious student and will live on in my heart as well as all who ever knew him I'm sure. Just last night, another former student of mine was killed running cross country. I was his assistant principal last year. It is NEVER easy to lose a beloved student. I only recently learned of your loss as I would have been there to support you and your family in any way I could. Jody, you were one of the parents that I remember so well and loved dearly at Homer Jr. High when the kids were there. My heart hurt so very much you. As a mother, I can only imagine your grief and pain. I lost my mother in March and it can be overwhelming. If I could talk to my mother right now, I would tell her, take care of Mikey for Jody until they are together again. It's true that everyone grieves in their own way but if there is anything in any way I can do for you, please Jody let me know. I know how much you love your children. You are a wonderful mother. They say time heals all wounds, but I don't believe that. I think time only allows us to learn to cope. The wounds in our hearts will never truly heal until we're with our loved ones again. As I pray each night, you, your family and Mikey will always be a part of them. My love to all of you, Nikki (Smith) Beck

Mikey,
I love you so much. Since June 6th, I've been looking at the world through a different light. Ever since I can remember, I've always looked up to you. I'll never forget how kind you were to me (and later ym sister) while we would invade your house while my parents were on vacation. You were always willing to put down what you were doing to come play with us, and for that, I can't thank you enough. I can honestly say that I don't remember the last time I saw you. I think it was Christmas of '09. You came up to my brother's room and played videogames with us, always "letting" us win, and cheering us on when we were unsure of something. It saddens me that I can barely recall the last time I saw you, let alone the last time talked to you or hugged you. Although I can't change the past so that I could have spent more time with you, you'll always be in my heart. I love you buddy, it was truly an honor to be able to call you my cousin. Love forever,

I am deeply saddened for all of you as you go forth without your precious son. I didnot have the pleasure of meeting mikey but I feel as if I knew him through his devoted mother. Jody we all look forward to your stop outside our house on the bookmobile and I always appreciate your patience and your kindness in offering not only your amazing knowledge about books but also your friendship. I was shocked when I learned of your sons death because I remember you talking about him and I admired your ability to allow him to persue his dream despite the concerns that you may have had. I cannot believe that God would ask you to carry such a heavy cross especially so soon after the death of your father, it is too much. I hope you will find some comfort in the knowledge that you have touched other peoples lives and that they are praying for you. I will keep you in my thoughts and I will pray for you and your family. Thank you for being an important person in our life please allow us to be there for you if there is anything we can do.

To Mike and Family,
Words cannot describe the pain you and your family must be going through at this time. Not many people have the courage and honor to do what he did for his family and his country. I am thankful everyday that I have the freedom I have, because of your son and people like him. I only met Michael a few times while working with you, Mike, about 9 years ago...He definitely is a "mini you"!! I hope that in time, you and your family find comfort in knowing that he died for the people and the country that he loved so much. He was willing to lay down his life, for a friend's, and in doing that, he is a much bigger person than so many people in this world. We need more selfless people like Michael in this world. So I say "Thank You", Michael, for all that you have done in your life...You are now at rest, and no longer have to fight for what is right...You have done that, and it was an honor to have met you in my life...My deepest condolensces to you and your family, Mike. He is gone, but never forgotten. :(

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms, PFC Michael C. Olivieri. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Michael. And to Michael it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while deployed with the U.S. Army in Iraq. No greater love and patriotism are shown than when a man lays down his life in service to his country. Michael, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Michael’s family and loved ones.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

Olivieri Family - My prayer is this poem I wrote will comfort you. It is: FALLEN HEROES - From the time I was conceived God had for me a plan. He wanted me to get involved to help my fellow man. I know some were against it but God knows what is best. Since the day he took me home I've had perfect rest. Heaven is so beautiful I'm walking streets of gold. Now I'm serving others including saints of old. I know some still have anger about the way I died but God and I both have seen the many tears you've cried. He is a God of comfort whose love will never cease. Give your feelings to him and he will give you peace. As difficult as it may be please don't hold a grudge. Remember this my loved ones God alone will judge. Then on that resurrection day when all the dead will rise the Lord will reunite us together in the skies. Please don't be sad and mourn for me I'm doing what I love; serving God and watching you from his throne above.
Thank you Michael for your service.
