Michael Duncan Obituary

Michael Duncan, 55, passed away on May 30 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Missoula, Montana to Clyde and Ada Duncan, Mike spent his childhood in Royal Oak, Michigan, joining the Army after high school. Following his Army stint, he attended Eastern Michigan University for his B.A., and University of Utah College of Law for his J.D., then reentered the Army as a JAG attorney. After serving honorably at Fort Carson, Mike established his law practice in Colorado Springs. As a lifelong supporter of equality for all humans and care for all animals, Mike lived a life of service to others. A former state legislator, he was the current Chairman of the El Paso County Judicial Performance Commission, a member of the Ben Wendelken Inns of Court, and past secretary of the El Paso County Bar Association. Mike was also on the board of Safe Place for Pets, former president of the board of the Trails and Open Space Coalition, and actively involved in multiple other non-profits, including the Pride Center, ACLU and Ground Zero. He was also a lifelong fan of baseball and a connoisseur of microbrews. Mike is survived by his mother, now of Nobleboro, Maine, his fiancée B. Kate Harvey, his brother, Paul Duncan, of Michigan, Kate's children Robert and Scott Harvey, and former spouse and still friend Linda Boedeker of Colorado Springs. He was preceded in death by his father. A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 4 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Safe Place for Pets, P.O. box 38202, Colorado Springs, CO 80937 (www.SafePlacePets.org) or the non-profit of your choice.

My husband and I met Mr.Duncan about 12 years ago. He was a quiet but very nice man. Anytime I called with a question he always made the time to help me. He was a great guy and I feel glad that I got a chance to know him.

We didn't know Mike, but learned about him after finding a balloon that was aparently released at his memorial. It came down four miles north of Yuma, CO. Quite a journey, and it sounds like his was too!

I met Michael Duncan in the early 1990s while he was working at Trial Defense Services, Fort Carson. Mr. Duncan impressed me by his very aggressive representation of those soldiers needing legal services. More recently, I applied for a job at his law firm. While he did not hire me, he responded to me with a nice email. I know many people who Mr. Duncan represented over the years, and they all have great things to say about this lawyer.

Mike helped me tremendously, defending me in a grueling court-martial at Ft. Carson in 1990. He worked tirelessly to defend me. I considered him not just my attorney, but a very close dear friend. I am indebted to him and will never forget him.

Michael leaves an incredible legacy of a richer community and a much kinder society that better understands the importance of caring about each other and our environment. Among those many causes about which which Michael cared passionately, the Trails and Open Space Coalition - which he chaired - will be counted among those many groups and causes he touched.

Sending our thoughts, love and prayers to you and your family, Michael - from those of us members of the Board of Directors of the Pikes Peak Trails and Open Space Coalition who had the privelege of serving with you.
God Bless.

Mike was always willing to pitch in to help, to offer his wry humor to diffuse an issue. Even in the throes of dealing with cancer, he offered up his well-known smile and laugh.

MIchael Duncan was a person of integrity, a person with great loyalty and a person with a fantastic laconic sense of humor. Michael served as an officer in the County Democratic Party in the early 90's and we could always count on him to be logical, low key and most of all - funny. I will miss Michael Duncan.

Mike will live on in all of the hearts of the organizations and people that he gave so much too....He was a champion for the underdog and a friend to so many. The world is poorer for his passing but richer for having had him for a short time. I pray that his memory brings comfort, especially to Kate and the boys.
